Not sure why anyone would feel upstaged if they are content with the watch they have. My favourite watch is the Submariner Date. Closely followed by the GMT Master II BLNR. If I’m wearing either of those (not that I care) but I wouldn’t feel upstaged by anyone. In fact, if I was a millionaire I’d be content with those two watches.

I've never really felt upstaged maybe because l am passionate over my collection. My Rolex AD just had a reveal party at a cigar bar to showcase their new Seiko line and there were some guys rocking some nice stuff and a few brought their collections with them. One wearing a platinum Daytona and another with his WG DD, plua a Zenith Daytona as well. It felt more like a commeraderie between us. I was wearing my week old Blnr thanks to my AD and feeling pretty good too.

I recently acquired my first Rolex (BLNR) and I am super proud of it. Recently, a client comes into work with my grail watch, a DD - 228238.
I mentioned to him I admired his watch and without hesitation, he took it off and told me to try it on. I was in disbelief and in admiration of such an iconic Rolex. One day, I told myself, one day; but not today :) |

On a NYC subway and saw a young woman wearing a Pepsi with a faded bezel. Man, they both look great.

Just out of interest.
Reverse the situation. Does anybody here feel a slight smugness when their watch upstages a watch that has been "wrist-peeped" and is the owner's opinion, considered better. Certainly if the "wrist-peeped" watch appeared at first glance to be a "bells & whistles" piece, but instead turns out to be a fake..... |

Hey, there is always some collector who has something rarer/more desirable than you. I just enjoy the pieces I have and happily smile for the other guy.
On the flip side, there are guys who would kill to have the pieces you have! So enjoy it in good health. On the flip side, som

I love seeing beautiful watches in the wild. Even if they are levels above what I'm wearing.

I’ll admire other people’s watches or good fortune. I’ve never felt inadequate or ashamed. Plus for all they know this might be your lowest valued watch that you own.

I was in Hong Kong last week and it seems that everyone including the taxi drivers had a sub on. I had my BLNR and felt a little different. Then in multiple occurrences in the elevator of the Cordis Hotel where I stayed in Mong Kok and walking around Harbor City in TST you'd see RMs, PM APs and PM Pateks and then I felt like a local!

It doesn't matter which model of Rolex you wear, they are all made the same. I used to be so proud of my OP34 silver dial, and now I am proud of my Explorer 1. Truth be known, I almost wish I had kept my OP34. There is nothing that can upstage that watch!

I honestly find watches a great conversation starter.
If someone is wearing a $5000 + watch, whatever the make, he is a passionate watch aficionado just like myself so lets get talking watches. It never fails. If his watch happens to be better than mine, good for him, I'm genuinely pleased for him, I'll ask what other watches he considered before buying his current model. I just love watches. |

Never. Not even sure why someone would feel this way unless you bought a watch to impress people. Grateful I got what I got in this life.

Never feel upstaged. Never met someone else in person with the watch I owned at the time (PP 5167, Rolex Smurf, SD43, White Daytona nor BLRO, etc.) However I have met others with watches I find interesting (regardless of price) in which I strike up a convo and find out they are a WIS too and have a good convo regardless what I'm wearing. Never feel upstaged.
Only time I felt a ~similar~ feeling was when I was at the Four Seasons spa and some rappers (not to be named) were wearing big Rose Gold APs and Diamond crusted PP. Didnt get the WIS feel from them nor do I make convos when relaxing in a Spa but I didn't acknowledge what they were wearing as also was poor taste talking about what was locked in your locker IMO. Just saw the watches and was like hmmm. Moved on. Just like I think a PP and Richard Mille are equally beautiful, normally with quite a range in price, but each impressive on their own.

Price has never really been a guideline for upstaging for me... I don’t care what watch you have on, when you have some real horological knowledge is when I feel “ upstaged”.

Actually I upstaged my Rolexes myself when I began wearing Patek Philippe and Audemars Piquet. Just finer watches.

Guess if that’s your priority save up and buy a watch over $300k. Chances of getting upstaged then go down to almost 0.
