What is all the hype about these watches. Why do they cost so much ? Do they hace some sort of cutting edge technology other watches do not ??

Extremely overpriced and for whatever cutting edge technology so to speak is used I'd rather buy a nice cutting edge car or invest in real estate ... I personally see no value in the brand.. |

It’s a combination of exotic materials, specialised designs and movements, very low production numbers and price point exclusivity at play.
Certainly not for everyone’s tastes but they do have some great pieces for sure. The overly gaudy ones though are a bit much for me.

I appreciate the craftsmanship but find most of the dials extremely hard to read.

When I meet someone wearing RM they (almost) invariably have personal issues

RM uses cutting edge technology not only in their movements, but also with case materials. Everything on an RM is finished to a really high degree (their movements are built by Renaud et Papi / AP).
Are they overpriced? Sure, but so is a Rolex. |

I try to never say anything about Richard Mille because I don't "get" them, but since you asked: I think that if I didn't know they were six digit watches, I would think they were three digit watches.
I have never seen one in person, other than walking by their boutique on Rodeo Drive while on vaca. They hardly seem like the style of watches that will stand the test of time once athletes and rappers and whomever else likes them move on. But I could be way wrong.

I think they make some cool watches, really dig their Velcro straps too.
Mille is a marketing genius, selling $50k watches (compared to industry metrics) for $200k+. He pretty much created a new segment in luxury watches where ceramic+quartz+nylon are valued over gold and sells for 5x as much as a similar by function Patek. I’m clearly not in the uber rich demographic these are targeted for, but I appreciate folks with enough F-you $$$ to splurge on something that probably won’t be around in 20 years. You know, instead of buying evergreen Patek PCC and real estate with the same money, but they probably already have all those. |

Varies model to model. Some can also fetch a big premium & are hard/ impossible to get at MSRP. Same availability game as Rolex, PP and to a lesser extent AP right now.

Exclusivity and craftsmanship. It’s just like Patek/AP but more of radical modern design.

Exclusivity combined with the fact that they make a really nice watch. Some designs are hideous though. Think of them as a more expensive niche AP without the history.
