Will the Air-King finish production next year
The bloodhound project is possibly finished
Will this mean rolex will end the current Air-King as it's based on the clocks in this car https://www.gtplanet.net/the-bloodho...d-speed-quest/ |

Yes indeed the bloodhound project is dead. My hope is that the Air-King lives on.
On the other hand if it’s discontinued then my watch may be a little more valuable. |

I doubt that in seeing that other models live off their past legends and accomplishments and the fact that it is a good seller and entryway into more costly sports models. I wore mine as a daily and then traded up to a new Polar.

The dial colors may have been based on the Bloodhound instrument's color scheme, but the Air King still has a classic aviation motif with the minute markers being most prominent.
There is no obvious reason for Rolex to discontinue the Air King based on the discontinuation of the Bloodhound project. Of course, Rolex will do what Rolex will do, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Rolex still makes the D-Blue dial DSSD despite that project being long over.
I don't see this being any different. |

As an American, please enlighten me on how the Air-King is connected to this race car except for two dashboard gauges? I don't see a big crown sticker on the body. Is Rolex a sponsor providing cash to the project? The last time I remember something like this was the Bluebird 50 years ago.

That's the link.Rolex supplied the rev counter and chronometer for the SCC bloodhound in 2012 ..then in 2016 the new Air-king was released after the previous model had been discontinued..it was a shock that the watch was re-released..the new watch design was also the talk of besleworld at the watch face was based on the clocks Rolex supplied for the bloodhound car with 5,10, characters the green and yellow Rolex etc..a lot assume that the current Air-King design will only be around until the bloodhound breaks the 1000mph record. Other than the rev counter and Chronometer there is no other reference to Rolex with the car. The new backing will mean the watch will be around for a few more years

I think this is a rare mistake by the crown. The new op in black and white would have be more appropriate as the new air-king, the new air-king could have reserecked the speed-king name.

1st, the dial is in and of itself, a pilot watch dial. If they named this watch the Speed King, I suspect many people would very likely and similarly call out the fact that the new Speed King has a pilot dial 2nd, if they launched a Speed King watch in direct homage to the Bloodhound project, the Speed King would be forever tied to the success or failure of that project - risky business for Rolex to hinge the success of their watch on a project in which they have little control. Launching a new Air King pilot watch is just that. Launching a new Air King pilot watch. It was re-designed with some respectful nods to the gauges in the Bloodhound, but it is an entity of it's own as it is descendant of the Air King heritage, not the Bloodhound. (I also want to add that on the Rolex clocks, like the ones in airports, the Rolex branding is printed with a green ROLEX, and a gold crown much like the Bloodhound dials and the AK dial) And that's the reason that I think that the Air King will live on, even after the bloodhound project is finished. Yes the Air King nods to the Bloodhound, but it's a watch of it's own right, so it's not tied to the project. |

And 99.999% of Rolex buyers have no idea what the Bloodhound is; a dog?

I like the older ones and the newer one does nothing for me.
I'd like to see a 39mm version of the older 34mm watch. |
