GMT 116710 Superluminova

Hi everyone

Just a quick question.. I was browsing some pre own rolex stores search for some vintage Rolexs.. what capuchin my attention are some 116710LN selling at 10-15% premium over some other similar 116710LN.. the shop keepers and the owners of the shop told me these GMT are the earliest version of any ceramic sports rolex which comes with the green Superluminova lume. I was also told these have a relatively short production life too as I was told.

Is this true in other part of the world? Anyone come across similar remarks?

Thanks!

Cheers 🥂
Jen

First I've heard of this type of premium for the green lume dials. With Rolex nothing really surprises me anymore though, so I'm assuming we'll be seeing these referred to as MK1 dials and 'collectors' will go crazy hyping these versions across the boards and social media!

Yes, the earlier 11671x dials glowed green instead of blue. The easiest way to tell is to look for two sharp corners on the letter 'G' in "GMT".

Whether or not they're worth a premium really only matters if you care what color it glows at night. Here in the US they're still priced by age and condition, not by dial lume. Your situation sounds like a money grab by shopkeepers hoping for "collectors" trying to find so-called "investment" watches.

On your last point, there's no such thing as a flat-four Hulk. "Hulk" is ceramic. You're thinking 16610LV, or a "Kermit" as some call it. This is why (IMO) nicknames are silly.

Of course this type of post pops up right after I sold my superluminova 116710ln...

What I will say is that when I did my research on pricing for 117610LNs, I did not find this to be true. Perhaps it’s a very new trend in the second hand market, but I did not see it when reviewing 116710ln sales as I planned to sell mine.

What I found is that it seems newer models sold at a bit of a premium to older ones.

haha.. well maybe this is just a local trend.. even the DD2 now are trading much higher than any DD40 despite all the advancements made in the DD40!

Sounds like dealers might be bumping prices on slow sellers to ride the current wave of low availability. Can't blame them, really. Might as well try while the market is hot.

Personally, on the LN, I actually prefer the older green lume as it matches the color of the GMT hand and text (while the newer blue lume on the BLNR looks perfect). That aside, I know a lot of people like to poo-poo idea that this type of difference means anything but looking at the current vintage market, much smaller difference make a difference in collectability. It may not matter now, but I'm willing to bet that it will make a difference in the future.

I totally agree! I am in the market for vintage pieces now and I am shocked even the font makes a huge difference wihich are hard visible ie the long E for example. What more to say the DD2 is like the “freak” of the collection and the earliest LN ceramic GMT which are not just the first GMT but it is also the very first rolex ever to have the ceramic bezel.
