Question about Rolex celebrity endorsers

So I was just thinking about some of the celebrity Rolex endorsers and thought of a question I thought would be interesting to ask here. So obviously we're aware of waitlists and that some Rolex's are much harder to come across than others. Let's say a huge Rolex endorser like Roger Federer woke up one day in 2016 and wanted the new Panda Daytona, or woke up this morning and wanted the a new Pepsi GMT, would he simply be able to call Rolex and they would immediately put one aside to send out to him that day? Would he even have to pay for it? Or would even someone with a big endorsement deal and arguably one of the "faces" of Rolex still have to wait to get their hands on one? Just thought this would be an interesting and fun thing to ask

With Federer I’m sure they send him any watch he wants I presume. Doubt the words “waiting list” apply to him. Rightly so that they shouldn’t.

I'm thinking the former that you mentioned would be the reality. If someone is the "face" of Rolex, they gotta keep them happy....Right? I suspect they would immediately pull the desired watch out of a latest shipment going out to an AD. Ultimately, some unknown person on the list somewhere will have to wait a little longer for their Daytona C or BLRO.

Rolex also gifted him a 6263.... I am sure he gets whatever he wants, along with other member's on their roster.

I would imagine the many
$$$millions Rolex are paying someone like Roger Federer he might just be about able to pay a little premium & go grey...

I wonder if these "face of Rolex" celebrities have to sign some sort of agreement to only wear Rolex? It would make sense. Would look pretty bad for Rolex if lets say Roger Federer was spotted wearing a Patek out in public on his leisure time.

They probably engrave Roger's watches like people who work for AD's when they get a watch so they dont flip it. This so Roger cant flip and make a little extra cash on the side.

I think this the case for the most part, but certainly there are exceptions. Clooney, an Omega ambassador, was photographed wearing a Rolex and that photo was posted online. Rolex asked him not to wear it anymore as he is an Omega brand ambassador. I believe the photo turned out to be fake.

Then there is Daniel Craig who is an Omega Ambassador but wore a Rolex to a Bond publicity event. Something like "Bond wears Omega, I don't" was the reason. But he's photographed regularly wearing Rolex and has a sizeable Rolex collection, so maybe his deal is more flexible.

I think Daniel Craig became an ambassador (not as 007 but personally) around the time of Skyfall. He has not been seen wearing Rolex since in public

There was a thread about this a year or two ago. A guy posted from Dallas saying he is friends with Jordan Speith and how his deal with Rolex works. You can probably search for the thread, but the gist, if I remember correctly for JS is he identifies a few watches he wants every year and those are the ones he wears. I don't remember if he exchanged watches from one year to the next or if he got to keep and added to his collection every year.

Probably each celebrity has their own deal with Rolex. I'd imagine Federer gets what he wants, when he wants. But as he's so popular I'm sure Rolex wants him wearing as many models as he is willing to wear. I wonder I feel they have to "encourage" him to wear SS over PM...

Yeah, I think you're right. He wasn't after his first Bond and I think that's the movie he was endorsing when he wore the Rolex.

if you're endorsed by rolex then yes, just like if you're endorsed by nike you don't wear adidas and vice versa

I deal with some very rich people and I've seen them get gifted watches in boxes at events. I imagine its quite similar. I don't think he will have the power to get what he wants... although if he did put in a request I'm sure they would oblige. But I think it's more you get what you get.

I'm pretty sure if you're endorsed by Rolex you get whatever you want whenever you want. Do you want rumors to start going around "that Roger is on a wait list for a daytona?" That would be embarrassing.

Plus from a marketing point of view, you get the hottest items to them since they're photographed so much.

Pretty sure Roger's assistant calls rolex and says "he'd like a white stainless daytona" and bam, it's like prime, at his door in the morning!

I think it's important to differentiate between just asking for something and getting it for free, and being able to buy whatever you request. They probably have a certain budget per annum that they can use toward the watches. They can probably get whatever they want at any time if they pay for it. Either way, they bypass any wait times.

Well I'm re telling from memory what some guy claiming to be Speith's friend said. I didn't find this claim unbelievable, JS is from Dallas. My guess is that ambassadors get for free a certain number, and they can buy whatever they want- probably without a wait. But it wouldn't be that enticing to be a brand ambassador and have to purchase the watches you are endorsing.

I'd also guess the duration of their ambassadorship determines what watches they can request. Federer can probably get what he wants. JS may have had to start with SS models and work his way up. Also there is some likely attention to the age group the ambassador relates to, for JS its probably younger people who are more likely to afford SS then PM so Rolex wants him wearing watches targeted to the 20 something buyer. He wore/wears an Explorer II a lot, if he had his pick of all models I'd be surprised he'd choose that. Maybe he really likes it, but if I could choose any watch it would've been something else.

I used to see Ricky Fowler wear the Platona all the time, and Justin Thomas with the full gold CHNR. My best guess is that Rolex probably tells them what they'd like them to wear. They don't want all of them wearing the same thing.

Good point about Thomas, I haven't seen him wearing that one. Folwer's been around the PGA a lot longer than JS so maybe he got to start at the other end of the food chain, or he bought it himslef.
