Complimented by stranger in Supermarket

So I left the gym and stopped by our supermarket - Von's - to pick up some healthy snacks. I'm in the line and behind me, a guy points to my wrist and says "nice watch" (Smurf).

He went on to say he collects watches like GP, Panerai, etc. He then shows me his watch that looked like a black-faced Big Pilot. He said it was a Steinhardt, and proceeded to tell me about that company, to which I responded that I was familiar with it. I told him about Rolex Forum.

First time in my 4 years in La Jolla that it happened. Made my day.

PS: I've been off the forum because my mom died a couple days ago and as executor, I've been busy making arrangements from a distance, hiring a local lawyer, etc. Things are going smoothly, though.

It is always nice to have a friendly conversation about watches but the thing I find is that Rolex is attracting all kind of people while wearing my JLC for example I get asked only by people who are really into watches. I have been wearing all kind of watches at work and nobody ever asked, I got my first Rolex ( a modest 16570) a couple of months ago and everybody was like oh Rolex, is it real, can I see it, are you sure it is real ... I think exactly this was the reason why I was postponing my first Rolex purchase ( which I found was a big mistake not only because Rolex is a great watch but also because watches I decided not to buy years ago almost doubled in price)

Sincere condolences for your loss!

My condolences.

Every time I’m in La Jolla I get to see some sweet cars like Rolls & Bentley’s casually driving through the cliffs and main drags!! Beautiful place!

Sorry for your loss John. Took about two years to settle Trust related issues after my Mother passed. Hang in there! Time is your friend in these days of loss and great uncertainty.
Best of Luck and cheers to a Wonderful Tomorrow!

I’ve complimented nice pieces when the compliment is due. Ie. DD, PMs, AP, etc.

I hate when the response is. “Thanks, I have no idea what this is, I just happen to buy it cause it looked cool”. Idiots.

Well, depending how long you are here, you can walk around the village to eat and shop. You can walk along the beach and the children's beach which is where sea lions cavort.

The are restaurants facing the beach.

Oh, you can walk to the place on the beach where they rent paddle boats, and you can ride them in the tunnels under rock formations, and ride along sea lions.

You can easily spend a couple days in La Jolla, but you can drive north a couple miles to Del Mar, another beach community, or drive South to Pacific Beach and other beach communities.

La Jolla is a suburb of San Diego, so you can drive (or Uber) into San Diego main, where there are too many attractions to list.

Good luck. Weather should be great then, but it can drop to the 60's in evenings during the spring, so bring a light jacket or light sweater.

First,so sorry to hear about your mother.
Condolences.

Had a new patient. After a long visit I complimented him about his GMT Pepsi. He didn’t reply.

Cool to hear about the friendly watch encounter. I feel awkward initiating a watch conversation, the other guy always has to do it first lol.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Glad to hear matters are being settled smoothly.

Sorry about the loss of your Mom John.
A few weeks ago I also had an encounter in the Supermarket, only I was the one who made a comment.
A guy was wearing a Sea-Dweller 16660 from 1982.
He was happy to chat and show me his watch, and that made my day too.
He took an interest in my SubC 114060, which was not so exciting, but special to me.
Best wishes.
