Really interesting story.

I had one guy sit next to me on a flight a few years ago that was quite obese. He wanted to raise the armrest between us and I declined. He persisted and I said that I think the armrest will help us keep ourselves in our designated spaces. That was that, and as polite as I could be. And it did, to some degree anyway. I’m not a small guy, though I’m not obese. I need all my space as it is.

I’d not be pleased of this happened to me. And it has, to a lesser degree.
I don’t think I’d go as far as charging the guy. But I’d have likely been pretty annoyed.

I’m with you. I’m not sure if I would have the guts to say something, but it’s a terrible situation to be in. I really do think that airlines should make people over a certain weight buy a second seat or upgrade to business/first. I mean, jamming yourself into a seat that’s clearly too small has to be a safety hazard for you and everybody around you, no?

You can't choose who sits next to you, I'm with Doc Brian, keep the arm rest down and insist on it, that's really all you can do, any more than that and your grandstanding and becoming a delicate tulip.
I've broken that rule for myself only once when a mother alone with an infant needed some extra space to maneuver. I allowed her to do whatever she wanted, though it was not a fun flight. Fun flights are extremely rare, be prepared for discomfort, delays and seeing some human traits you aren't fond of, it just goes with the territory.

You can’t charge a person extra because of obesity and you can’t charge extra for crying babies, they are both similar issues. I think each person should have a certain level of responsibility to respect each other both sides. If you are way too obese and you know you are getting into a long flight and you are certain you will cause that mush discomfort may be you should be considered and try to book two seats. Again, only if you can afford it. I try to wear off my kids before we got on a plane and teach them how to behave. On the other side, you should expect to be tolerant of other people issues. If you sit next to an obese person or crying kids; tough luck, take one for the team and move on. But I don’t think you should charge them any money. Clearly the person in this article was very self conscious hence why he agreed to pay.

I think people should pay by the pound: the heavier you are the more you pay. Because it costs more fuel to move more pounds through space. Simple physics.

This story doesn't bother me at all. People should be accountable for their decision to become so heavy they don't fit in one airline seat.
I once went on a date with a woman who was at least 30 pounds heavier than what was depicted in her (probably years-old) dating app photos. Without mentioning any specific reason, I told her it wasn't going to work and that I'd like to end things then and there. She said I was "discriminating" against her weight and was a "terrible person." Okay. She can do whatever she wants with her life, but nobody is obligated to date her. Just like an airline doesn't have to let a 5'9" 300 pound dude pay for one seat and occupy two. |

I didn't bring up her weight. "Discrimination" has a become a catch-all term for decisions people don't like. If I were five foot 3, or had bad skin, or had no education, or listed my profession as "janitor" -- then I doubt this woman would have agreed to the date. when she makes a decision not to date someone, it's apparently fine. When others choose not to date her, it's suddenly discrimination

Putting aside whether or not the story is real I believe a person must be able to remain within the confines of his/her own seat the entire flight otherwise they should be required to book two seats.
I would have likely sucked it up and dealt with this though. I’m not going to bring up someone’s weight in a public place. This is why I don’t fly without Xanax. It’s FN miserable up there. I’d be fine with a policy where the large man has to exit the plane and wait for a flight with two seats available. It would be embarrassing as all heck but I don’t see another solution in this instance.

But in the end, she won’t learn a lesson from it. You are still the jerk in her mind. If she was smart it would be a wake up call. Or at least an invitation to update her profile. But that’s unlikely. Our species tends to prefer blame, rather the reflection.

They weigh checked baggage. There is a surcharge for excess weight and size. So there is a good reason for airlines to crack this issue via policies. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Airline travel sucks. Getting stuck next to a huge passenger or a crying baby can make a sucky situation much worse, if you let. Or, you can try to be a little bit empathetic, perhaps even a little accommodating, and make the best of the sucky situation.
When I used to travel a whole lot, and that didn't work, I just drank my way home. |

So, the intolerable problem was going to be resolved by the airline putting the obese man on another flight, but.....$150 made it tolerable?

I’m not concerned with the mentioning of the overweight person needing two seats. But, asking the guy for $150?! That is beyond gross. Give me a break “ i paid for this comfort”. No, you paid to be on a public flight because your too broke to fly private or even first class. For the record, me too. So i deal with the hell that can be economy. I don’t think i could have said anything to the person. I would unfortunately sacrifice my comfort for a few hours to make a person not feel bad about themselves. That must be humiliating.
