Explorer 1 declined
I had the opportunity to purchase an Explorer 1 today and decided to not buy it.
It could have been added to my collection of a Bluesy etc however seeing it and trying on it was very underwhelming in my view. A great entry level professional model but not for me so I will move on. |

I saw one available in our local AD. Liked it but didn't love it.

Gotta buy what you like that’s for sure. But the Explorer is without a doubt one of Rolex’s most iconic watches. Simple yes, but also elegant and like you said “sporty”. Its a watch guys watch and flys way under the radar..

It is a wonderful watch, but you were right not to get it just because it is available. If it is not what you really want. I bought mine a few months ago, as I wanted it to replace the previous 36mm model that I regret selling. While the new one is a wonderful watch, it simply doesn't replace my old one.
Anyway, as you say, move on and find one that you really like. I got my first Sub the other day, a 114060, and it will likely get way more wrist time than my Explorer 1. Happy hunting for your next watch! Cheers, Carl

Buy what you like and not because of the hype. Hopefully it will go to an enthusiast!

The Exp1 might be a bit underwhelming/boring at first glance. The Exp1 needs time to grow. Its my 10th Rolex and Always overlooked it because i thought it was to generic had no place in a large collection. Now its my favorite Rolex watch. Again you realy need to wear it for a couple of weeks to understand its beauty.

Explorer 1 is an understated Rolex and overlooked by many. But you definitely have to buy a watch because you love it.
I have been offered "popular" watches like BLNR and Green Sub at ADs and passed on them because I did not love them. I felt it was better to leave them for others to buy and enjoy! |

My 114270 is a dream watch in my humble judgement.
I did try on the 214270 when it first came out and although I liked it, I still prefer my 114270.

i like it on OF that looks awesome, i would pass the oficiall version too. If it came on rubber from the factory, i would be all over it.

I tried one on a couple of weekends ago. Great watch, but my OP39 has all the same bases covered, for the most part. So I too passed.

Did the same this weekend.
Even was stoked about it being a birthday present. I think its flashier than my 14060M which was unexpected, hoped it would be more under the radar. |

That's one Rolex that in my opinion, looks great on a NATO strap. Or any other strap for that matter. The Explorer II (40mm version), as well for me.

Does absolutely nothing for me. Explorer II polar dial on the other hand is very very nice.

I had the exact same scenario. After reading all of the entries on the forums, I had a chance to purchase, but just didn’t love it. For some reason the OP39 Black Dial just did more for me.
That’s why I love this hobby. One person’s grail watch may not even interest someone else. We are all a little different in what makes us tick Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I owned one briefly (2016 model) and never warmed to it. No regrets flipping it.

Your are correct. There is nothing entry level about the explorer lol. I guess he's basing it off the simplicity of the dial?? Because its the same bracelet as GMTs and its more expensive brother the EXP 2. What he doesn't realize is that's the point of the watch. A no frills take whatever you can throw at it kind of watch
