Proportionality.

It is simply wrong calling the Explorer "entry level". It is THE original sports watch and one of the most important ones in the line-up. It might not live up to everyone's idea of a fancy Rolex or the design is too bare, etc, but to me, it has always been and always will be, one of Rolex best models.

PS. Got both the 114270 and the 214270 Mk II in the collection. DS

Not sure why everyone seems to be offended that the Explorer is being called "entry level." It is the least expensive professional model... and in fact, less expensive than any other Rolex model aside from the Oyster Perpetuals and some small steel DJs. Not to mention it's one of the few that is still occasionally available in AD cases. For those looking for an entry into the world of Rolex's historically significant sports models, the Explorer is the most accessible.

Good on you for passing. Hopefully the watch will soon be in a home where it is loved.

That Expl. I escaped a close call methinks

Otherwise, it would have gone through a quick flip early in its life away from the AD.

Must say it takes patience to pass up a model in this hot market.

Glad to hear you didn't purchase it just because it was there. Different strokes for different folks.

I am sure it will make another customer very happy in no time!

The Explorer is a is a very pure design. To me, it is the Calatrava (5196) of Rolex. It's thoughtful of you not to buy it just because it was available. I'm sure it's someone's grail!

You're right people get overly sensitive to the term entry level. The fact is an entry level Rolex is just like an entry level Ferrari. You get most if not all of the features as the higher-end models, but a fraction of the price and with a tad less prestige. The smart money in many cases buys "entry level". Same can be said about many of the Rolex less than ~$8k-10k entry point. But what people don't realize is entry level has nothing to do with being a cheap product, it is feature focused and relative. An entry level Ferrari is different than entry level Honda. We're getting too caught up on schematics.

I could be mistaken, though.

Oh my mistake. For somee reason i thought it was 39mm.

Thanks for clarifying. :)

Who cares if it is entry level.

I liked the EXP I and II much more than my 114060. Bye bye Sub C, with no regrets.

This BS is all subjective anyway.

People have different tastes. I find the Explorer 1 one of best sport watches in the Rolex line-up. I certainly picked it over a couple options of the Sub and GMT when I had the choice.

It may be of one the most "affordable" or some call "entry-level" Rolex but it's far from being a introduction to Rolex ... which you can argue is the DJ and Sub. <-- Introduction to Rolex.

I wonder which terminology is a harsher reference hahaha

I say buy what sings most to you. That's the reason why there are various models to pick from.

I think the only reason they are relatively easy go find at an AD is that many wouldn't buy one because it's " too entry level". I like it for it's low key simplicity and lack of useless decoration. I don't need a big ceramic bezel with numbers I"ll never use, a date with it's own personal magnifying glass or a polished jubilee bracelet. It matches how I dress and goes with anything. Entry level....or fundamental?

That's a damn nice watch. I don't have one yet but I do plan to add one. I suspect it will get a lot of wrist time.

It’s nice but good move to just move on. If you do not truly love it not worth it. Also you would lose a couple bucks via resale.

The Explorer is not for everybody and it is best to get the watch you like to wear. I love my Explorer. Some folks refer to a seven thousand dollar watch as an entry level Rolex - that is on them. I bought the watch an AD because I liked it not because of some phantom, fiction and illusionary sweet non-existent low price. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and it is a beautiful watch to me. Now there are a good number of folks who even after nine years still complain of the 2010 3mm diameter size increase from 36mm to 39mm. Putting aside subjective style preference the Explorer ref. 214270 is the best Explorer that Rolex has made to date. It is Rolex accurate, durable with anti-magnetic and shock resistant features (Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring. High-performance Paraflex shock absorbers), water resistant to 300+ feet - I don't know about the rest of you folks but I don't scuba and I don't go below 20 feet, the dial is very easy to read date or night (blue Chromalight lumination), it is a simple non-gaudy watch that borders upon elegance and is highly versatile and works very well with all attire - jeans, shorts, t-shirts, suits etc., although there are better selections for black tie affairs you might be one of those who may be able pull it off with your Explorer . Additionally, the Explorer has a superior bracelet (unlike the 36mm 114270 and 14270) with an easy link extension and 90% of the people who see Explorer do not even recognize that the watch is a Rolex. And finally with respect to the 214270 Mk1 and Mk2 there are slight differences of the watch hand size and luminated 3, 6 and 9 numbers verses 18kts white gold numbers. Moreover you have to buy the Mk 1 used because it is no longer in production. Many folks like this 21420 Explorer but preference are subject and again the Explorer is not a everyone. For a watch with much more glitter one need only turn to another Rolex model watch that has the diamond options that will suit their preferences.
