1978 Black Z28 hooked up very nicely which I bought at age 15 & started restoring/modifying before I even had my license, it was more show than go but still a killer car to have during my HS years. Man I wish I would have taken pics of my toys back then. Had a wicked 12 sec. Mustang after the Camaro which I bought/built after learning the hard way that all show no go Camaro's get left at the lights with your G/F sitting in the seat next to you, haha. No pics of that one either though.

1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme - dark brown with a tan interior. I paid $1000 for it in 1983 and sold it for $600 two years later with a blown transmission.
It had the 350 Rocket engine, 5.7L V8 making a miserable (by today's standards) 180HP. Handling and braking were not exactly in that cars design parameters, it was more like a rolling couch, bench seat and all. |

One of these bad boys. Not so much driving but more riding. I've been fighting off the ladies ever since.

I drove a purple dodge neon that belonged to my parents until I got my "own" vehicle, a 92 Dodge Dakota with a 5.2 V8. It later had an electrical issue and almost caught fire. I'd also sneak my dads motorcycle to school every once and a while when I had my M1. Your instantly cool if you ride a motorcycle to school, the girls loved it...

...bicycle...
...I remember...it was a black Schwinn.
...many fishing trips on the old bike! ...many 15 mile rides, through the country, on gravel roads to my grandma's so she and I could go fishing. ...some great memories. Stan. |

I drove a BMX through most of high school. I graduated from high school at the age of 18, so I only got a car much later. Mostly through high school I caught public transport to and from school.

Upon my HS graduation, my mother went with me to purchase a 1973 Ford Pinto. Green in color. Automatic transmission.
I am so embarrassed to admit this. Now you all know something about me that few know. In going to college, I tied my Kustom 500 Stereo guitar amplifier to the top of this automobile and went to Dallas. Two speaker enclosures encompassing 6 15 inch speakers (both of them 60 inches in height) traveling 600 miles over the interstates of Texas. Picture this. The above with a 18 year old boy going to college at UT in a Ford Pinto! I wish I could go back to those days............

1960 Ford Falcon, 4 dr, 3 on the column, green/white top, black and red plaid pillows in rear deck, wire hubcaps from a Corvair. Hot to trot Senior year I worked at gas station after class and on Sat and had enough money to buy a new 65 Mustang, K code, 289 HiPo, 4 speed. Man, I sure would like to have that one back

Priceless. I remember driving to Disneyland one year, this green Pinto, that was literally almost dragging the passenger rear on the I-5, passed us at least 10 times. Was priceless too. This beatup car, no windows, feet hanging out the passenger window, listing to one side, would fly by us. Then I guess they stopped for repairs/gas/beer/ who knows what, but about every 30 minutes, they would pass us again

I think there are a lot of important life lessons to be learned by driving a POS during your teens IMO. If anything, it teaches analytical skills and attention to detail when trying to figure out what the latest noise, rattle or bang means & what needs to be done to get from point A to B (not to mention it definitely makes you appreciate A/C once you can finally afford to buy a car so equipped). OK, I realize I'm 32 going on 65 from the way I'm talking...I'm now stepping off the soapbox. Cheers. |
