The Michelle Obama thing was initial someone who once worked for her contacted the DA to urge her to have the initial "hate crime" aspect of the case turned over to the FBI to investigate as a federal hate crime.

The DA later recused herself from the case due to a conflict of interest after it changed course and Smollett was instead charged.

Since he wasn't charged, I don't think there's any reason he couldn't still face Federal mail fraud charges if he sent the threatening letter to himself and it can be proven in court.

The mayor certainly sounded POed. Sounds like it was handled above his head and he was totally out of the loop (see first paragraph).

I wonder why they would do that or feel it was any of their business too. Or what knowledge they had that no one else had.

I'm guessing they didn't trust the Chicago cops. Don't forget they had a reputation as one of the most corrupt police forces in the country. google chicago police corruption

And a hate crime prosecuted federally is more severe I believe.

Don't forget Obama's initial political machine was from Chicago and even the mayor was Obama's chief of staff at one time.

So when the initial "hate crime" occurred (which may or may not have, we find out later) some connected people wanted to make sure this was handled by the Feds.

So the fact this disappeared all of a sudden its totally possible there was actually corroborating evidence that was discovered. Seemed as though absence of evidence of a crime occurring meant the crime didn't happen, which in and of itself is weird.
