ROO Diver---new or used?
Hello all. New forum member that is looking to take my first jump into AP. Love the history, movements, and the aesthetics. Also the size. I've got a 7.5 inch, very flat wrist, so the 42 and 44 mm cases fit me well.
I've always loved the diver in black. Had the chance to try one on this week at an AD. Almost pulled the trigger. But I hesitated as I've seen slightly used models going for $4-$5k less than retail. And it doesn't seem like there is any budging off retail? Is there any real tangible benefit to buying these new, or should I just save my money? I'd prefer a sapphire back, so ideally 1-2 years old. I know service is pricey, but with a new-ish I should still be good a few years. Though...I also had my eye on a slightly used Titanium ROO chrono. Which is my dream watch. I can tell this is going to be addicting...and expensive! |

Hello and welcome to the forums. Buying 2nd hand or new is a personal preference. One of the advantages of buying new, is you will have the warranty in your name and more important, you will be establishing a relationship with the Boutique/AD. This will lead to a favorable access to the more wanted models that might sell at higher prices in the great market. So on the long run, you might be saving money.
If you want to get just 1 watch and thinking about saving a few $$ then go for second hand. However, it looks like you might be getting into AP for more than 1 watch (ROO chrono Ti anyone?), which is what most of us here are like. Therefore, a relationship with an AD/Boutique might be beneficial. Good luck in your hunt. |

Depends on if you are a ROO or RO guy, if ROO you can buy grey, if you want ROs then best to develop an AD relationship.

15% off isnt enough of a discount for me to get a used watch with an unknown history, moreso with AP. i'd rather get new with my name unless you are a flipper.

Pretty much sums the new vs. used question here. Ultimately it’s all down to personal preference, for me new is the only way to go. But bottom line is once you’ve had it on your wrist for a week you won’t care less where it was before that. The display back is definitely a big plus on the 15710 - one of the major draws for me to the watch. Rugged and sporty yet with an immaculate engine ticking inside.

OP, new with a discount is the ideal (and a possibility) for this reference. Good luck! |

I don’t mind buying used, so long as I know the history of the watch. And it seems the diver is one of the only AP models that takes that initial depreciation hit when new.
But then again, new from a dealer at discount would be preferable to get a full warranty. And many if the used examples I see are the solid case back. Which also means by virtue of age, coming up on service being due. What kind of discount do you think is doable? I think my reservation at retail of $19k is that I’m only a few thousand shy of getting a nice used chrono 44mm... which is ultimately my favorite AP at the moment. And thank you all so much for the welcome, and the advice! |

A lot of the ROO range takes a fairly typical hit moving from new to used. The current trend for all stainless sports watches is definitely buoying up the RO range. If your heart is set on the 44 chrono then don’t compromise on what you want. Save or allocate a bit more, and go for that pre-owned. The diver is an amazing watch and great step in, but it’s not the best ‘buy & sell’ stepping stone unless you get one very keenly priced preowned (assuming you’re not readily in the position to add a 2nd AP soon)

You don't have to buy it used, buy from a trusted seller here at a used-ish price but the watch will be unworn and straight from the AD. Worth paying this bit extra than for a really used watch imho.
