Love the modern dial design since it looks like no other model of Rolex before.

I'm currently on the hunt for my first Rolex as well which is a BLNR. I've also been thinking about the AK, but I have stayed the course so far and trying to hold out for the BLNR. I can totally understand why the AK is so tempting tho and I don't blame you one bit for pulling the trigger on one! It looks great! I'm glad to see you enjoying it while on vacation. Makes your vacation that much better I'm sure!
Thanks, I appreciate it! I am absolutely happy with the Air-King as my first Rolex and the honey moon is still going strong! I definitely agree with you, it's a hard split on who loves it and who hates it, but something about it just kept me intrigued for the past few months. Maybe its the fact that its quirky, has a splash of color, unique, and not very common. I liked the Explorer 1 as well, but it was a bit too subtle for my personality.

I'm still after the BLNR as well, but I didn't feel guilty buying the Air-King because I wanted something that would compliment my small collection and not be similar. It did hurt a bit when I handed over my credit card, but one look at the dial made it all go away ! I had a blast on my vacation and was glad it got to come along, made the trip that much more enjoyable. !!

Thanks Jon, I appreciate it! I considered the Explorer 1 as well, however the "oomph" of the Air-King was too much to resist. I love how unique it is plus not everyone has one which is even better.

Yep, it was a great experience all the way around for my first Rolex! Plus the freebies and everything else sweetened the deal for me. I figured why not ask for the stickers, doesn't hurt and pretty cool to have everything together. Which Rolex are you getting?

Thanks Jason!! I couldn't agree more, it's the perfect combination of all those things and is an absolute pleasure to look at! A quote I read on Hodinkee summed it up best; "One thing about anthropomorphizing your watches – you do it with a Rolex Air-King and you end up feeling like its personality has about the same level of self-doubt as a champion F1 driver."

I can't get enough of this one and am glad it was my first Rolex purchase, one I will never forget! Cheers my friend !!

I read somewhere that you never forget your first love and in regards to Rolex watches, I’m in love with my new 116900 Air-King!

A couple of months ago I stopped by my AD to check out their selection and inquire about getting on the waiting list for the BLNR which is my current “grail” watch. Given the current SS supply and demand, there wasn’t a lot of sports watches to look at unless I wanted to go TT or PM.

It was then that I was drawn to the Air-King in their display case. I tried it on, admired it for quite some time, reluctantly took it off, and haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I tried to satisfy that feeling by purchasing a Tudor Black Bay that I absolutely love, but deep down I couldn’t stop thinking about the Air-King. I like that it’s dynamic, different, and the subject of continued speculation.

I swung back by my AD about 3 weeks ago to try it back on and compare it against the Explorer 1 based on feedback from my fellow TRF’ers, but they didn’t have either in stock...I was shocked. They took down my info and would call me in a couple weeks when either one came in. Fast forward to last week when I got the call the day before I was leaving for vacation. I swung by and there was the Air-King, singing a beautiful melody to me from the coffin.

Well we all know what happened next, tried it back on and that was all she wrote...there is a fat lady singing somewhere ! I was able to get a great discount on it (double digit % off MSRP), my name on the warranty card, and my first official Rolex AD experience. Also got a few freebies thrown in and invited to their Rolex event coming up. My AD laughed when I asked them to save the stickers, must be a newbie thing haha!

Anyways, just wanted to share a good story and some cool pictures of my Air-King out and about exploring Portland this past weekend. !!

Waiting to board and admiring that dial

AK in it’s natural habitat

Pointing to an AD who I hear has Daytona’s in stock...

Cruising on the River, should I get it wet?!

Got it wet

Great watch and well priced!! This has really caught my eye since they were introduced!!! I'd love to have one but as yet have seen fit to get one!!! Great Rolex for certain and one of the sportiest available!!!

You and I seem to have the same taste! The unique dial of the AK is definitely what does it for me too. No other Rolex dial ever looked like this before. I will probably end up getting one at some point, but it's the BLNR that's first on my list, and is what I am currently shopping for. I have also been considering the 116610LV Sub. If I run into one of those first I will probably go for it. However, if I had the choice of both sitting right in front of me, it will definitely be the BLNR. Hopefully I will be able to post up my very own "Incoming" thread soon! :)

Thanks for sharing your experience with your AK. I love these kinds of threads!

Congrats on your new Air King!. It's a great looking and fun piece. I wore mine as a daily for a year. Having purchased a Zblue and then having a sudden opportunity on a new Polar at my AD l traded my AK in. I still miss it and that wonderful dial. I may have to do it again. Enjoy.!!!

Awesome watch! I've been considering an AK over an EXP1 just to have something a little different. It's priced so well and from what I can tell it's actually more readily available.

Random bump above on a thread that's about a year old.

I had a laugh reading the original post. Double-digit discount from an AD -- oh how much things can change in one year!
