White Daytona’s approaching 30k

What is with the Daytona’s approaching this price? I am seeing them now for 26-27K on the seller forums. Thoughts on this??

Way too many people with more money than sense in this "look at me" world we live in now, so expect this trend to continue.

$US26,000 in Hong Kong this week before the negotiation starts.

I saw a kid on the MTR wearing one. Showing it off to a friend. Kid admits that he picked it up at Lo Wu (commercial centre) in Shenzhen and that nobody can tell the difference. Kind of sad.

Good. When BLRO hit 25k, Daytona should be 40k. And yes Daytona has that much demand and power.

Huge demand for panda combo.

Anyone that pays more for a SS Daytona than a white gold one is mad.

Prices on the Daytona are heading the same way as the Patek 5711/1A for sure...300% or more of retail!

I just bought a BNIB fully stickered 116520 white dial from Europe for Euros 17,000. That's gone straight into the bank vault while I watch the mayhem from my sofa! *-)

MSRP reflects true intrinsic value of this watch, while market value is whatever someone is willing to pay for it in the secondary market. Is Daytona worth 2 or 3x the MSRP? I would argue that it isn't, otherwise Rolex would have priced it at that level to begin with. However, since we live in a time of irrational exuberance, prices will very likely keep going up, until we get to another downward economic cycle.

Sadly I can see this happening. Really sucks for those who continue to want one to just wear and enjoy it.

I completely agree with you. It’s a great looking reference but the fact that I can’t quickly look at it and see the time is a big no for me.

Totally agree with you, JayHantz. Turned 84 two weeks ago and I'll probably never get to enjoy one without paying these prices.

+1. Makes no sense. I've never purchased any watch for over MSRP...nor will I. I hate this market of everything being difficult to get. I'm fortunate that I've developed several AD relationships over many years and they treat me well. Do I have to wait a little, yes...but they always get me what I ask in a reasonable period of time.

For those with no AD relationship, I do feel really bad for them...and I could see an argument for getting the watch of your dreams immediately if you went grey and had to pay a few thousand dollars over MSRP just to get it now. However, the prices for the SS Daytona are just ludicrous!!! Logic and common sense have left the building a long time ago on those models.

I look at mine and I don't really get it. It's worth a few grand over retail maybe, but no way double and increasingly triple it, just all so divorced from reality.

Just a thought, but consider it's not the person who owns the watch who can determine what it's worth, but the person who wants to buy it.

Things are worth whatever people are willing to pay for them. Right now a loaf of bread is worth a few dollars, but in the event of enough demand (global famine) it could be worth more than gold.

At some point, someone will look down and say, I paid 30k for a watch that is illegible with a chronograph that is almost useless due to the same issue. Then the madness will end.

I mean from a value perspective the zenith el primero is like 6 grand, and a speedy pro can be had for under 4 grand, both infinitely more useful. Heck, the new navitimer reissue is a more interesting watch with more pedigree. But I digress, the Daytona in its current version is simply jewelry as most don’t care about the legibility issue and so may climb to even 50 grand.
