Flat magnification lens tech

Just read in the science section of the Economist that engineers at Columbia have come up with a technique for making flat magnifying lenses. It sounds like the technology will be inexpensive wants everything is worked out.

It made me imagine a date magnifying watch crystal without the cyclops. Would be pretty neat to see the watch industry adopt the tech once matured for natural light and higher % of light passing through.
