It's shocking right now. The body count's rising and there's no sign of it slowing down.
It was just stunning to read that Marysville was gone. Usually you read something like "A fire raged through XXX town", but to have it bluntly reported that the whole town went up in flames just like that was like a mallet between the eyes.

As someone who grew-up in wildfire areas, and has even fought a few, my thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost life and/or property.

Like everyone else my wife and I are saddened by the loss of life in these fires. Obviously arsonists need to be punished, but there does seem to me to be culpability on behalf of the planners/developers, whatever, that allowed communities to be built up in what is apparently a very hazardous environment. As we well know from west coast fires here in the USA, they are sometimes started accidently or often by natural forces-lightning. Those of us familiar with building regulations and development planning controls recognise that they are there for a reason and were often modified following tragedies--London fire 1666 and Chicago fire 1871 and San Francisco earthquake and fire 1906 are prime examples. Maybe with the realities of global climate change communities around the world need to review their development regulations.
