Visited Las Vegas Last Weekend...

Went to all of the AD's in Vegas. Six or seven of them I believe. Asked the same questions each time. "Anything in steel?" "Any sport models?"

Of course, the answer was always synonymous with "No". Absolutely nothing.

They didn't even have Explorers, or SS DJ41s in popular configurations! In fact, I heard the one AD tell a customer that "The Datejust 41 is very hot right now and we have a wait for it". Mind-blowing.

I also overheard a customer requesting a Platona, who got told "Even if you gave me the $75,000 right now I couldn't give one to you".

One interesting thing, 3 or 4 of the AD's all had the Yachtmaster II 116683 in White Gold sitting in the case. I always heard that was a bit of a rare watch but there they were, sitting in the case. Also, there was ONE yellow gold Sub at Caesars with blue dial. There was one Rose Gold Sky-Dweller w/ Gray Dial at the Wynn.

There was one thing they all had in common: cases and cases of 28-36mm Datejusts/OPs/etc. with wonky dial/bezel/bracelet configurations etc that nobody even bothered to look twice at. I wonder how much money the AD's are missing out on without the ability to sell Subs/GMTs/etc. on the regular.

The market truly is crazy right now.

Are you surprised?

I'll be in Vegas this weekend, probably won't even bother hitting the Rolex AD's, I'll check out the other AD's.

Actually I heard John Mayer is doing a video on YMIIs shortly so I would suggest let's grab them before they become "rare" and double in price overnight

I was there a month ago and visited a few ADs. A lot of what I saw available were models with diamonds, including this GMT

Did you imagine a tourism dominated city with high foot traffic to be any better than any other AD in the world?

No he expected just to waltz into every single AD, ask the same questions thousands of people ask and get the same answer for - "Anything in steel?" "Any sport models?"

They are probably selling more of those 36 mm and smaller watches now than they used to. The "desirable" steel and sports/professional models are flying out the door before they have a chance to sit in the case. Dealers are moving more watches out of their doors than ever before.

I keep seeing comments about the Platona being hard to find but I've seen one in the case at two local AD's respectively.

Agreed when I was there in april the selection was scarce for sure. Although I did get to try on this Platona and got offered another in the safe if I wanted to try on by the manager while the store was very crowded. The SA was asking about my DaytonaC and how I acquired it.

Definition of Insanity (how this market has become lately whiny see a 116500 white dial selling for 20-21K in January going to over 26k in about 6 months)

Exactly. Minimal effort will yield minimal results.

I am not surprised. Nor was I complaining. It was an observation.

Again, I fully expected what I experienced. Nothing more, nothing less. Suddenly it's a crime to inquire about highly desirable watches at a Rolex dealer? Interesting angle...

So basically nobody other than Rolex knows production numbers of these hard to get models in 2019. IF, and this is a big if, Rolex is building the same amount of Daytonas, Subs, GMTs, etc. that they did a few years ago, then Yes, AD's are doing OK. But if production slowed or distribution at least did, then they're hurting. I'm a phone call away from 3 different AD owners who I have on speed dial, so I could find out, but it's not worth bothering them over. When I want a piece, I'll just ask for it. I watched dozens of tourists walk in and out of the 6 ADs I visited without a second glance at any 28-36mm watch. When I say they had dozens and dozens, I mean they had hundreds and hundreds. Often pretty bad combinations too. Trust me, they weren't moving them. So sure, maybe they're selling more of them than they did (Because otherwise what else would they sell?) but that doesn't mean that they're happy. In fact, I know they're not. Maybe it is going to be like this permanently, and all Rolex ADs will become like Patek and AP have been like for years (AKA you can't get it unless you spend big money with us and even then 3+ years).

Saw a SS DJ41 in the case at SF AD earlier this week. When they don't have them in the case they say no more coming for the rest of the year. When there's one in the case, they say that's the only one they have. Enjoy all the fun and games in this market much?!

So what do you suggest? Walk around looking at a bunch of other jewelry (except for Rolex) that you have no interest in buying, make random conversation about the weather or other idle topic, then just when about to walk out the door *remember* to check the Rolex display?

The problem with the 116689 WG YM II is a combination of the 44mm size and its $48k cost. It takes a very special person to buy this new.

Lol didn’t even ask, just saw it in the store window. Now if they had some SS sports models to put in the window then that would really draw some attention!

I was at a downtown Toronto AD today chatting with one of the associates. The number of people stopping in to see if the ‘steel sky dweller in the front window was available’ was astonishing. It was white gold.
The SA said this happens all day every day.
