Traveling with two watches
Anyone here ever travel with two watches?
Going to a resort in Cancun at the end of the month and was thinking of taking two watches with me. One being my PO the other not sure, thinking about my Roadster. The PO is for swimming and playing on the beach and pools. The other is for night life at the resort. I am not too worried about theft as the rooms have safes and all are insured, but have never traveled out of the country with two watches. Wondering will I get any hastle coming back with customs? Any experences?

Mort,
Many times I've traveled with a GMT and a beater. It's never been an issue at customs. dP

Na, shouldn't be any issues at customs. I always travel with 2-3 watches and as long as they don't have tags on them, you're safe.

from a good friend in customs...
as soon as the watch is on your wrist and has no protective plastic on it, it is in fact USED and there for not new.
a sealed box with a pristine watch in it and no papers to show when u purchased it is more difficult, so a watch that shows some wear... no problem Herman enjoy your trip !!! |

I can't imagine that you would have any problems......
But, I almost never travel with more than the watch on my wrist.. It stems from a few decades ago when a watch and some other stuff was stolen from my suitcase somewhere in transit....

I've always traveled with two.
One is my Rolex. The other is my Casio jogging watch with an alarm in the event the hotel/motel/bachelor officer quarters does not have a working alarm clock. I've always had a Casio. Lost some and replaced them all. The Rolex does not get lost. Better safe than sorry.

Travel with at least two.
My biggest concern is safety for the one(s) I am not wearing. Had a very close call of the spare ones going for a walk, without me. Last weekend took a spare, and kept it on my body when we left the hotel room. THey had no room safes.

Customs agents are very, very smart folks. They sometimes do random searches. If you go to some questionable places, there is a good chance you will get stopped and searched. I traveled to North Africa in 1999 and got searched when I came back to the US. The customs agent was very smart and knew what questions to ask about the rocks I as carrying back.
If you are concerned about a run in with them, bring proof of purchase with you. I certainly would if I was traveling with two expensive watches. |

I just got through spending the month traveling through Myanmar (Burma) with 2 watches, no issues. I have traveled all over the world, mainly 3rd world countries with usually minimum 2 watches, sometimes even 3-4. No problems. Just keep the ones you use locked up in your hotel safe, or if do not have a safe, like I have not had most of the time, keep them locked up in a duffel bag. Usually when on the move, have of course one on my wrist, and the other down in my carry on small backpack or satchel, that stays with me all the time. You can easily also take the watch off the bracelet/strap and throw in a pocket also, I have done that before. No issues. Just be alert and take care of your items. If out and around and do not like the idea of leaving a watch in your hotel room or guest house, then put it in your pocket or your day bag/satchel along with your other important items (Camera, notebook, passport, cigars, pens, etc..)
And as for customs, I have never had any issues, and sometimes have had as many as 5 watches coming back into the USA with. Of course they were my own, and not in originally BNIB packaging. But, I have never, in over re-entering the USA about 100 times in the last 10 years, had customs go through my stuff. |

I like the advice of taking the watch off the strap and hiding it, if I take my Roadster, that will be very easy. Of course the resort we are staying at does have in room safes. But one can never be too cautious.

I always take two watches when I go to Florida. My GMT of course is my daily wear. I take my Omega X-33 for the chrono function (for timing our morning walks) the countdown timer (for timing when to turn on the beach) and for the alarm - which is the loudest of any watch I have owned. I can hear it over the surf.
I once took all my watches to a Toronto GTG and nearly had a problem getting back through U.S. Customs. I was carrying 8 high end watches in a carry case. The Customs officer started to question me. I told him I had come from a meeting of watch aficionados. He said that next time I sould get a customs form (you can find it on-line) that needs to be completed before you leave the country. Normally when I go overseas, though, I only take my GMT-II. I don't want any hassle on the return. And the GMT covers all occasions.

It's always safest to declare them upon your departure, to minimize the small possibility of problems as RockRolex explained.

No issues traveling to China with 2 watches. One on your wrist and one in your bag, no issues at all. Have crossed into China over a dozen times with 2 or more watches. No questions.
But, if you do not want to have to worry, just strap the GMT on your wrist like Rockrolex suggest, and wear the GMT 24/7 for your trip. Will cover all of your needs. |

On holiday last week in Grenadines & met an Italian chap with 4 watches (not all Rolex) & various bands. Had to get his watch, belt & shoes to match every evening. Interesting to see!

Gerardo, I would love to meet. We will be staying at the Secrets Maroma Beach. Which is not that far from Playa del Carmen. We will be down there from 2/27 through 3/5.
