Which Rolex should I buy?

Hello. I've wanted one daily wearer Rolex for a long time. I was originally thinking about getting a 36mm Oyster Perpetual, but am willing to spend around double that amount. For less than 2k over the Oyster, I could buy a steel DJ on the beautiful jubilee bracelet. That notion, in turn, makes me consider the DJ in yellow or even rose gold w/steel at around 10k. Also, the Oyster's limited [boring] dial choices compared to those for the DJ push me towards the latter.
I am planning on buying this watch when I finish school as a present to myself. Is the plain steel Oyster enough or should I splurge a bit? Gold or (gold and steel) for a day-to-day piece?
Thanks!

First Rolex, I’d buy a steel sports model like a Sub.

Go to an AD and check what calls you, I would consider an Explorer 39 too, but this one usually is not ready available on most ADs but it is not very difficult to get.

Lots of variables at play when it comes to your first. Do you own any other watches? If yes; What function(s) do those already fulfill in your collection/Sport vs. Dress watch?

If you have some sportier watches already, a Datejust with a fluted bezel & jubilee bracelet is a classic piece. Fits well as a dressed down daily or a formal piece. The Oyster Perpetual line does this as well on a smaller budget giving you some $ leftover for the next piece.

Classic sport models like a 114060 or a 214270 are excellent points of entry for a tool/sport watch.

Best thing to do is try them on wrist & walkout with the one that speaks to you. PM vs. SS is an issue of supply; A little easier to source PM at this time.

Well, I think that a 36mm watch best suits my 6.875 inch wrist. Does that not eliminate sports watches as options? Subs always seemed bulbous to me.

Buy which ever you like. There is no way possible a stranger is going to know what your personal style is or what you will like.

I’d go datejust jubilee with a fluted bezel - you can’t go wrong!
