Submariner 16610 vs 116610
Looking at getting the Submariner. Considering the older 16610 vs the 116610. Like the shape of the case and lugs better on the 16610, but like the bezel and clasp better on the 116610. The price difference is negligible and with the improved clasp and bezel, I am thinking the newer Submariner, but what do you think?

If you have a smaller wrist I would consider the 5 digit ref.

I had a similar question and went 16610. It's the best watch in the world, will always be a classic, has dexy lines, and whilst it may appear that the clasp is flimsy it's as strong and light as a space shuttle and better built. No rolex collection is complete without the James Bond of Subs. Suggest looking for a 200-2006 model.

Both great. But that glidelock can’t be beat.

You take more chances moving into the secondary market, if you are a neophyte. Of course, "buying" the seller first will diminish the risks.
Beyond that, you can't go wrong with either choice. I'd suggest trying on both pieces first, though. My 14060M:

Definitely try both on before committing to purchase. They're actually complementary, in a way. Two quite different pieces, IMHO.

5 digit is more comfortable for me. 6 digit bracelet is unbeatable. I enjoy the 5 digit bracelet but it’s a night and day difference.

I have the old and the new Submariners.
For me they both have their positives and negatives.

Personally I think the 5-digit Sub is probably the coolest watch ever made (with the exception of the 5513 maybe).
For me the older one is like a beautiful, slim mistress with a LOT of "history". In comparison the new one is like a fat, good and sensible wife who cooks good food. Seriously, the new one is much better watch but it's not even funny how much better the old one looks.

When it comes to a decision like this you really need to try both on. You can't go wrong and it mostly just comes down to personal preference.
If you need glidelock then that will settle it right there. |

I purchased a 5 digit D-series in 2005 that I love and think it's the perfect watch. But if I were shopping today, I would probably go with a 6 digit. The price of the 5s have come up so much that making the leap to 6 is not much more and then you have the 'current' version with the nicer bracelet/clasp.

I had both and the new one wears far better, the older date looks a bit small now, I think if you go vintage it’s a no date and new its a date, just my opinion

No shortage of either on the used/grey market. If you like the modern feel of the newer models I would not hesitate on purchasing one. Imo, 5 digits are great as well; Try both on at a Used/Grey dealer. That is the best way to decide.

The LV is my favourite for the bezel but also the maxi hands and markers which give it a fuller look

If you can, try them both on. They are both great watches. Pick the one that feels right for you.

OP - I’ve been in your shoes before when trying to decide between the 5-digit and 6-digit Submariner Date. I originally did not like the 6-digit, from pictures thought the lugs were too wide and it was “too blingy”. My 5-digit Submariner Date had lug holes and the slimmer profile and was my daily.
I ultimately converted to the 6-digit and have zero regrets. It does not wear as “wide” as it shows in pictures and it feels like it’s worth every penny that it costs, and then some. So, I would choose the 116610 over the 16610, but you gotta go with what “sings” to you most. |

I agree with what JP says above. The 6 digit is the better watch but the 5 digit is the better looking watch.
