Grey Market Yachtmaster

Hey guys, have been lurking on the forum for several years. I now have my first question which I am seeking outside input. I have an opportunity to purchase a 2019 steel yachtmaster blue dial. It has all the boxes and papers. Purchase date was 1/22/2019. The watch looks great. I have purchased several watches from the dealer over the years. He did inform me the bezel was sandblasted and polished. It looks good and I am likely not good enough to notice anything on my own. He is offering it to me for around $1,000 below retail. How does this kind of work on the bezel impact the value as well Rolex RSC service in the future.

Thanks for your input.

Why not get a new YM from AD?
YM are easy to buy from ADs.

Noway I would touch a watch that’s been sandblasted and polished.

Sounds like he is describing the factory finish as opposed to a "re" finish. Not sure what you are concerned about?

If you are concerned about whether this finish is hardy, it is.

Yes, it's hard to believe the bezel needed to be polished with a purchase date of January 2019! And sandblasting refers to the factory finish.

A sandblasted (look) with polished numbers is the normal bezel for a Yachtmaster so I doubt the bezel is refinished.

Do you have pictures of the watch?

For $1k, I’d just buy new, get my name on the card and never look back.

It’s a great watch. The bezel is tricky to refinish if it gets marked. The seller has carried out the correct process if it needed to be corrected. The price is your call. Mine is a 2018, worn on rotation on work free days and so far loving it.

Agree with this - alternatively would try buy new from AD as these are still accessible.

Man it's beautiful, so underrated as everyone is after the mundane sub. On my buy list.

A discount of $1000 on a $10.000 watch is still a discount of 10% and a lot of buyers would be very happy with that in the current market.

The bezel is the main feature on the Yachtmaster. I'd be careful, look at it real good, ask him for a loupe to check for imperfections.
You dont want any surprises down the road.

Thanks for the input. He did say the bezel was refinished in his email. Have not been able to speak with him to find out why it was refinished. I have purchased several watches over the years and he has been pretty straight. My AD has non-blue dials. They have put all blues on allocated lists. They did get me a Datejust 41 blue earlier this year. The loupe is a good thought.

Love this watch, but at that price, AD all the way, if none in stock go on a wait list, it’s not a hot watch so you shouldn’t have to wait long.

That bezel is probably close to $1,000. I wouldn’t bother with that watch, find a better example. I have been looking at that color a lot lately, i love it!

These show up in dealer windows frequently enough that I wouldn’t dare touch a YM that was already refinished.
