One of the issues I have with this topic though is the logical inconsistency people display. 700 odd people die every year falling down the stairs in the U.K. alone yet most people don’t live in a bungalow whilst refusing to enter a multi-story building unless it has an elevator. More than a thousand die every year in car accidents yet not a single car driver gives the possibility of being mangled horribly in two tonnes of twisted metal a second thought.

I suspect part of the reason is the emotive way things like watch muggings are reported. They’re also disproportionately reported in terms of the comparison with other types of crime against the person, though I can’t prove that supposition.

My view is if you’re worried about wearing your watch out and about in a familiar environment then you ought to fear leaving the house full stop. Unless your house has more than one level, in which case you should also fear staying indoors.
vending machine accidents kill more people in the US every year than sharks.... yet people are still fat and are scared of the ocean. Same thing. Imagine if they gave the candy dispenser the same avoidance that they give a great white

I think the thought of being taken out by a shark is pretty scary, I'll take the vending machine all day.

Bad weather, overpriced everything, rude dealers, and this is just another reason I hate the UK

Mexico, Hawaii, Vegas, even South Central LA feel safer

Interesting posts gentlemen. All this talk about London is very disturbing because I really love the city. I like to travel in winter so I'm always wearing heavy coats and for that I feel safe every year in Europe and NY. However, if I'm wearing just a t-shirt I don't feel the same way. Everything worked perfectly fine this new year's eve in Europe, just like NYC in february, but I went back to europe in may as well so I had to walk around wearing just a T-shirt and to be honest it was not that comfortable for me. The small city here where I live I wear a different Sub everyday, and despite the country and the big city a couple hours from here being regarded as dangerous, I know my surroundings, I exercise situational awareness and I feel ok even with polo shirts etc. Insurance here is extremely expensive so not an option for me. I must be smart to enjoy the hobby otherwise I'd have to get rid of all my watches. Not the best moment in the world today for those who collect watches I guess.

Rolex and saftey concerns

London is magical ROFL. Spent three years there, never need to go back.

As for US versus UK on safety. You don’t get killed in the US for your watch. You get killed because religious fanatics shoot up schools and movie theaters with automatic weapons in the name of some guy. I wear my rolex, AP, Patek to work every day without thinking twice about it (all insured). I’m far more likely to be killed for my religious beliefs than for 10-50k worth of metal on my wrist.

One of the better derailments I've seen. Managed to work in guns, politics, and religion within only a few sentences

He forgot knives. UK gangs allegedly use knives.
