I love all the responses! Very entertaining to read! Basically it comes down to personal preference. No matter what Rolex you own you are not a poor person. I love both SS and my TT Blue Sub. It's all good. Not everyone has a Rolex on their arm.

I think TT is classier and dressier, SS is the everyday, work, casual watch not that it can't go both ways.
TT will come back, everything does My Grail.....the TT blue dial sub |

For those that prefer SS (and are married), do you wear a wedding band on the same side? What material? As for me, I'm 30 years old and rock a TT Sub. I have a TT wedding band on the same hand.

TT is "unwanted"??
I looked at a TT blue Sub last week and I can't get it off my mind. Anyone have an "unwanted" 116613 they want to swap straight up for my 116610? :) |

I love the look of the TT blue Sub. It was the watch that made me fall in love with Rolex.
My husband was given a TT black Sub from his father. It is probably not the Rolex that he would have purchased for himself (he was leaning towards a SS Sub), but it looks great. The gold links are, however, not very durable, and are very easily scratched. Posts like this are tough. I think it is legitimate to ask (respectfully) why some Rolex models are more popular than others, or have a higher resale value. Certainly not all Rolex models are as equally coveted as others. To use an automotive analogy, I don't think it would be controversial to say that the iconic Porsche 911 is a hit, and the 914 was a miss. To me, the Porsche 928 was one of the most beautiful cars ever made in the last 40 years. I have a friend who owned two of them. The marketplace, however, disagreed, and the 911 is the clear winner. Even the once-popular Porsche 944 was discontinued. Getting back to watches, I got the ladies' platinum/SS Yachtmaster in February 2001. I have worn it nearly every day for 11 years. I find it as gorgeous and appealing now as I did when it was new. I cannot believe how durable it is. I acknowledge, however, that the Yachtmaster is not the most popular Rolex model (as evidenced by Rolex removing the men's 40 mm from its website). I see more SS Submariners in a month than I have seen Yachtmasters in a decade. I also acknowledge that the trend has been towards larger watches, and that many women find my size watch to be too small. Just the other night I tried on my husband's Submariner and found it to be ridiculously large on my wrist. When I see TRF members gushing over women wearing Submariners, or commenting that a ladies-sized watch is too small, I do not get offended. I do not think that TT watches look dated, or are an "old man's watch." I would think that an all-gold Day Date would look out of place on, say, a 25 year old man, whereas a TT Submariner would not. I see Subs and Daytonas on all age ranges, whether SS or TT. SS seems to be more popular, though. I do not see as many DJs. But, when I do see a man wearing a DJ I've noticed more smooth bezels on younger (i.e. under 40) guys and more fluted bezels on older (i.e. over 40) guys. I think style of watch, e.g. bezel and bracelet (Oyster v. Jubilee) says more about a sense of style than SS vs. TT. But, that's just coming from an over-40 female WIS. |

T.t models
I think two tone models can be very desirable and they certainly sell on the seconhand market. I have a few and I love them.

Other than the "DeepSea" all the SS models look too Industrial to me. I want to have a little bling if I own a Rolex.

I am new to this forum and absolutely a non WIS. I came to this forum because I needed a quick education before shopping for a new watch for my wife. It's been an education but I must say some people here take owning a Rolex watch much too seriously. Only enthusiasts notice what kind of watch anyone is wearing.
I bought an AK Date 30 years ago and have worn it constantly until Xmas. My wife has worn a TT Datejust for the past 25 years. In all those years neither one of us could ever remember anyone mentioning anything about my lowly AK or her TT. This Xmas I decided it was time to get "Old What's Her Name" a new watch. After my quick education I bought her a WG Pearlmaster 80319 and while at the AD, I bought myself a TT Blue Sub 116613LB. Now, finally, the point of my tale is for the "Joker". Yes Joker, I could afford the gold Sub, but I remembered what a friend of mine told me when he saw my new Porsche 911 last year. He said: "anyone who buys a car like this must hate his money, hell it doesn't even have a spare". It was duly noted and therefore the TT. My wife on the other hand deserved better for putting up with me for the past 44 years. The WG will easily pass for SS. Finally, no one will ever look at these watches except her and I. We will aprreciate them but in the end they are only baubles that feed our little vanities. Now that the AK is retired I will be like the great majority of Rolex owners who only have one watch and will never sell or trade and hold on to it simply to tell the time..... |

This thread is really quite over the top: generous helpings of anti-80s/anti-geezer/anti-niveau riche/etc, etc. vitriol followed by nearly epic butthurtness (to coin a term) from 2-tone devotees across the spectrum. Sprinkle some moderator justice here and there and we have quite the entertaining thread!
Way I see it y'alls, the wallet vote is the only one that counts: if one likes the combination of st. steel/18K then he or she should have a watch so configured. If not, then go for something in stainless, platinum, or yellow gold. There really is no wrong choice...it all comes down to what suits each of us best, according to all manner of factors that determine exactly what "best" is for the individual. There's room for us all at the proverbial Big Watch Get-Together! Best Regards, "White Metal Guy" |

Huh?

Can anyone provide any proof that a SS watch will fetch more than TT? With gold at $1600/oz and SS at ~$10/lb. I'm pretty skeptical.

A couple of comments: if you go on a cruise, or to an all-inclusive resort pretty well anywhere, or you go pretty well anywhere outside North America, you will see TT Rolex Subs, GMTs and Yachtmasters much more than you will see SS- and of course this holds true throughout Asia.
I think the $12000 list price is the problem in NA because the resale drops so significantly - but I can say that my TT blue Sub C is the only one in my collection that I have bought used (great deal- guy changed his mind after paying $10000 to an AD and sold it to me for $7000). I get constant offers from dealers at $7000 for cash sale or trade because there seems to be a big demand at that price point, just not at the AD list |

I don't think that's the claim. It's about the degree or percentage of depreciation that each has in the secondary market. The precious metals depreciate relatively more.

I am sure it's been said before, but I think one of the major reasons for the depreciation of the two tone and solid gold Rolex watches is as follows:
Faster wear and tear/stretch on TT and solid gold over SS bracelets, particularly the two tone jubilee bracelets, result in the need for bracelet replacement Sooner and at a significant cost over an all SS bracelet. In short, buying a TT or solid gold watch that has been worn and it's bracelet stretched to the point there is very little service life left means it has to sell at a big enough discount off its true secondary market FMV to offset that bracelet replacement issue. A replacement two tone oyster bracelet for a GMT 1675/16753/16713 is currently retailing at the Rolex AD for $2750 plus tax.

I don't think depreciation concerns are much of a factor on the secondary market...the original owner takes the big hit. In my opinion it's just the flashy look that's not as popular. The TT Blue Sub was my first, loved it for several years but eventually I grew tired of the bling... especially as the economy nose-dived. TT = LOUD

I am not so sure that the TT Sub depreciates any faster than the SS. when you factor in the much larger discount. In my case I bought my BNIB 116613LB at 25% discount for a net price of $9,060.00 plus tax. That was $3,020.00 discount. I don't know if buying two watches at the same time influenced the amount of discount. I bought my wife a Pearlmaster also. I did not price the SS Sub but from what I have read here, the SS are not dicounted as much.
In my case it's all irrelevant because I am a one watch guy and do not trade, sell or collect. I was simply looking for the best price. I may not have gotten the best possible deal but I don't think I left much money on the table. |

I don't like the look of anything two tone as it all looks dated. It has to be one color for me and for now, its SS. I have considered rose gold but haven't found one that really makes me want to spend that kind of money on it

Good question!
Good point! If they are so unwanted, I think I will buy some SS models and trade them for TT. According to some on this thread the owner of the TT will send me their watch AND some cash. UGH - to think I bought my TT (used) without thinking of that first!
