While I love this red line sub and the service updated 1655, what does their future hold as collectibles?

Won’t they all have to eventually be updated? I mean, won’t the radium or tritium just fall out of the hands or off the lume plots and cause damage to the movement eventually? Aren’t these watches to be worn?

I’ve heard of people who collect service dial variants, so if that segment of collecting takes off, they could end up doing well. I imagine they will always fall short of their original counterparts ; although scarcity seems to drive demand in a lot of cases with the watch market so really hard to predict

My first Rolex, purchased new in 1999, was an A-series “Swiss”-only Submariner. Always enjoyed the uniqueness of that dial. Bought a no-date Sub of the same vintage a few years ago. Most write off the Swiss-only dial as a service dial, as yours is, but they’re still special IMO. And there are Subs that, like mine, are original issue. Haven’t read of an original issue red 1680 Sub Swiss-only dial. And that 1999-2000 era was short for the Swiss Sub dials.

Recently I acquired red 1680 Sub that is in great condition. Had a choice of two - one with lume and dial issues and then there was the one I took home. After reading of your red Sub adventures, I wonder if I should have followed your path to another Swiss dial! Your research and perseverance certainly paid off with a keeper. Congrats!
Thank you!

Yes. These watches are meant to be worn. The dial on my watch was in bad shape and I love that the RSC was able to make it look like new with a new factory dial and service. It looks like it did the day it was purchased. Vintage aesthetic with modern lume. Perfect for me.

Looks amazing! What a journey but it paid off in the end. Didn't even know they still had these dials available!

Seeing your watch as it was intended to be, almost brand new looking like the day it was first sold...just wow. Your patience definitely paid off!

Fully agree with this. Feels almost surreal seeing a red sub the way people saw them back when they bought them. Never seen one in "new" before. Beautiful.

For some this is amazing but not my cup of tea as it defeats the entire point of collecting a vintage rolex.

RSC still supply Red Swiss Luminova (with flying saucer lume plots), so they are easy to get.

I sourced a couple of heavily restored 1680 reds in the last 2 years for a couple of pals.... who unlike me, like their vintage cars eg 328, E/type one and a half and DB 4 'uber-restored' (eg new hides, rubbers, door cards, carpets, roofs/linings, brightwear and ancillaries etc etc).

I got them (neither were 4.4 million serv case btw) on service 91350s, new dials, hands, acrylic, crown for £7,500 and £7,750 respectively so quite cheap to source!

You were able to get the watch and compete with service parts at those prices? Cool if so!

Yep .... I am a procurement-bandit mind

ps Stands to reason as imho value is in essence the parts/bits cost. Illustrated by another chap I know having his 5513 run over by a truck about 6-7 yrs ago. He fancied a new 5513 from the ashes of the incident, so had RCS build him one. A 4.4 case plus all the new bits cost him I seem to recall £4,500 I'll see if I can find the invoice. At time a brand new 114060 was bit more than £5k btw. We were chatting a few week on what it's worth now...we concurred about £6-7k perhaps now.

I think if I had the red dial, I’d never take it off.
