One last comment on this. It may be viewed as a publicity stunt (at least as far as Rolex's involvement goes), but they do hope to get 4-6 hours of scientific observation on the bottom out of this effort. They only got 20 minutes of looking at kicked-up silt from the Trieste (which was much more of a human drama, and a mind-boggling achievement for 1960). For that alone, I think the current effort deserves credit.

I switched from my Explorer to my DSSD this morning to celebrate this historic day - on Isofrane, of course!

To the naysayers:
Have any of you ever heard the words "fundamental research?" That's what the watch is about. Fundamental research is not supposed to be practical, it's to add to the base of scientific knowledge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_research

Yesterday we got a look at the first wristwatch that keeps time at over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters). “It’s a lot like our new sub,” said operations manager Dave Wotherspoon with a laugh. “It’s got a viewport, a penetrator plate, and a pressure-resistant ‘sphere’ to protect its ‘instruments.’”

Off the bottom after 4 hours...should surface in 90 minutes. Hope some abominable unidentified evolutionary relic of a fish didn't steal the Rolex off of the submersible's robot arm!

Actually, the more you read it (especially out of context)...it might be the most ridiculous sentence EVER! ...yet, it still makes perfect sense!

Back at surface waiting for diver support. Wow. Remember the Trieste from my grade-school science class. Very cool accomplishment, whatever you think of Cameron (myself included).

Rolex does make some of the toughest quality watches out there but the irony of it all, this new Rolex 12KM waterproof watch when bought by a Rolex owner would sit inside a locked safe. LOL The closest liquid it can encounter would be the owner's sweat. hehehe
I see people take off their Submariners when dipping in the pool or going out, snorkelling in the sea. LOL |

In all the press information, I haven't seen a definitive statement about that yet, Dr. Robert.

I would suspect that if the crystal survived, there is no reason that the watch wouldn't come back up ticking, given that it had the trusty 3135 installed.
