I was manager of an ice cream shop in Chatham Cape Cod. On Band Concert Fridays, we'd scoop 1,250-1,500 cones in about 4 hours. Line out the door. Crazy summer job. Following summers I was in fresh fish receiving (boxed on ice, for shipping to Boston and New York), painted houses, washed windows, waited tables. Done it all.

My parents were upper middle class, but no way they would buy a $600 watch. I just loved scuba diving and just had to have a submariner. The red lettering did catch my eye (actually very subtle, hard to make out the word "Submariner", but those in the know knew what it was. I recall it being about half my summer earnings.

I was never a collector, but in the mid 90's just as the internet was starting up (I worked at Oracle) I bought a 1967 Rolex Explorer 1016 used on a new auction site called "EBay" Paid about $3500. I always liked the stealth look of the 1016 (vs the obvious look of the submariner). Glad i bought it.

Both watches I guess are worth $20-30K each I think. But I have too many fond memories every time i strap it on my wrist. If I sold either, I know I'd regret it. I did that once with a motorcycle. Never again.

My daughters loved the ruggedness of the all stainless sport oysters. Got minty used ones for each as they graduated. one a black faced datejust, the other a yachtmaster (her decision). Both girls were national sailing champs (thought one might actually get a free Rolex one day (prize given by Rolex to U.S. Yachtsman of the Year) with her Olympic aspirations.

Anyway, thanks for asking. Crazy how fast life goes...

Walked into an AD when I was 21. Walked out with a 1016 on my wrist. Left the box and papers behind. It was just a watch.

I was 23 years old.

I had just returned from fighting in the Iraq war and had some money in my pocket. I still wear the 16234 today.

It means the most to me of any of my watches - by far.

23.

Gmt 2 batman, paid something like $6700 which included a discount from the rolex AD and free gifts plus bottle of champagne lol. I remember thinking there were so many to choose from, and at the time I chose it because I liked the glow of the watch at night...not realizing all rolexes at that time had the same nighttime look.

47. On a pretty big splurge-out vacation for our 25th anniversary, I was looking at (yet another) cheap watch and my wife said no, you need at least one good watch. So we picked out my DJ2 with fluted bezel. In 2016, at a discount from MSRP.

And I became obsessed with mechanical watches (oh good, another expensive hobby…). But because it’s basically expensive jewelry, my wife approves of it. :D

Now I have two Rolexes, a Speedy, IWC, a Tudor, two Orises, a Seiko Turtle and a MoonSwatch….

22, Sea Dweller 16600, still have it and still wear it. The non cyclops was the deciding factor, together with the dial which has a glow that the submariner did not have.

I bought it on lay away, paying a little every week for a few months.
