Wow. When I first told this story to my gal, who is in no way a watch person and who was, um, a tad dubious about my spending 10k on a Rolex, even she was aghast and sympathetic and rooting for the guy. And yet...all just BS? Kinda sad, really.

Maybe TRF needs a bit stronger "gauntlet" that helps screen out situations like this. Not a MOD created one but one that involves those on TRF that have been here a while and are a bit more cynical and doubting. Threads like this need proof prior to the entire site jumping on a bandwagon of support for a possible party that is really just yanking the chain of folks that can afford to buy a Rolex.

If this was a joke, it was an elaborate one. He posted this in the WRUW thread.

I replied two times to this thread...once to the OP stating "one of the screws probably came out of a link" (or something similar) and quoted someone else's post. Never once did I say I'm sorry to hear about his supposedly "lost watch" or offer my sympathies or wish him luck.
Reason being is because too many people had way too much sympathy for the loss of a material object that is replaceable, and it actually made me sick to read how so many are materialistic on this forum. If this were a life people wouldn't have shown as much sympathy. Say what you will about this post, but it's the damn truth, unfortunately.

I agree, older posts sounded genuine. The ghosting was odd but kind of feels harsh to ban him.

Okay but how would insurance fraud be in play when OP admitted to finding the watch on a public forum?

It was only a guess because it makes no sense at all to ban him from the site for simply losing his watch. How has the site responded to the explanation of the ban?

I don’t think TRF needs to explain their actions. If the OP objects, he can plead his case to the moderators.

Oh, I never doubted that he owned a Rolex, or that he always wore it. My cynicism arose as a result of what he posted about losing, looking for, and subsequently finding the watch, yet never returning to tell us what happened to it to cause it to fall off his wrist.
And after seeing the pic he posted of it on his wrist saying that he was getting ready to “shovel a couple driveways, then some sledding …” I’m wondering if that’s the pic to which he referred when he said that he had taken a pic of it on his wrist at 12:30 and that’s the last time he remembered seeing it. Look at the time he posted that pic. The time shown would be the time local to dpt.Calvin (and I don’t know where that is), but even if was 6:43 a.m. Pacific Time, it wouldn’t be anywhere near noon where the OP is (NH/MA). |

If someone is claiming something happened he/she will often build a story using others to help verify. If someone is going to intentionally "lose" their item and then file a claim it would stand to reason that they would point to where the people gather that "sort of witnessed" the event that caused the item to be lost. A kind of collateral verification.
This would certainly make for an excellent Twilight Zone episode. |
