But in the case of something new, we're talking about upwards of an $8k watch-not something I'd go banging around in.

Which is why I always find it a bit amusing. I'm not going to say there aren't some people who truly feel these are diving instruments and aren't jewelry. But the vast majority of Rolex buyers/owners (myself included) DO find and treat them as jewelry. And the argument that someone would choose a Submariner over something else (even as "sporkish", whatever that means as my humble Benarus) always seems to be how much better they're made, how they're more reliable, more accurate, etc. I'd say anymore that's very arguable-I spent <$500 on that watch. So far, it's keeping as good as time as my Sub did (maybe even better). The fit and finish is top notch. But if I bang it on a door, while I may cringe, I'm not going to cry about it-and I won't have just devalued it by another few hundred dollars.

I guess I just wish people would be honest about why they HAVE to have a ROLEX for whatever particular purpose they're lauding. Again, I'm not saying you're NOT being honest-I'm sure many are. But for me, I've always thought they look awesome, are recognizable, have top notch fit and finish, and make me feel good wearing them. But I would never wear a Rolex to do yard-work (no matter how old and beat up it was).

Not trying to make anyone unhappy on this fine Thursday afternoon. I'll just go back to enjoying my cheapie "spork" now.
Fair enough also - I see your point!

TT Rolexes are nice. In fact, I don't see other brand of TT watches looking nicer than a Rolex one.Just that we don't have enough celebrity wearing them unlike SS or YG to make it really popular.

Do keep one TT sub, just in case James Bond wears one, one day.

Yeah I saw a guy the other day wearing a Two Tone something on a jubilee style bracelet.

Whatever it was, it sure wasn't Rolex as evidenced by no cyclops and the fact that the yellow color was putrid. I wondered why he bothers wearing it.

I glanced down at my DJ and told myself "these are totally different animals."

I think all Rolex watches look great--SS, TT, and full gold. Can't go wrong with any of them.

That said, the only SS watch I own is a Timex.

And while I'm at it I think you can only pull off a full gold watch with gold bracelet if you are Tony Soprano or Elle Macpherson.

A gold watch with leather strap is hot though, not too over the top.

Stick with SS, it rules!
Totally agree with every word. Well said.

For me, i can't see myself wearing a full gold bracelet watch. I am 35. I personally think its not for my age to wear a full gold watch. I would wear a gold watch with a rubber or leather strap.

Also I can't see myself wearing a full SS Watch. I think it looks inappropriate for my age. Maybe in my 20s I would have worn a SS watch. I however would wear and I own, an SS watch with a leather strap or a rubber one.

For me, its not about the resale value or if you have enough money etc..Its about what makes me feel comfortable when wearing that watch. Maybe when I am older, I might feel comfortable wearing a full gold watch but not now.

I own a TT GMTc. I think its the best TT watch out there. I would not wear any other TT brand, other than Rolex, myself.

I love these threads that go on so long they need to look for a publisher.
Some of the posts crack me up. Particularly the ones that call for the thread to be locked (but they have to have their say first)
The only things I find 'offensive' are personal attacks. Opinions are just that - some people place too much importance on them - if they are rude opinions they just reflect on the poster. I do agree that persistently rude people should be banned however.
I love TT DJs - not all that common on TRF 'For sale' at the moment. I for one would like to see more of them. (seem to be plenty on Ebay however).
Variety is the spice of life - both in posts and in watch styles.

Why is that? I thought that the SS watches were the most neutral and uncontroversial.

Its personal preference.
I think all around stainless steel gives a much younger image than what I would like. TT, on the other side, gives the watch a more of a mature/classy look but not too old like all gold would.

Consider who the OP is on this (now tired old) thread - a TRF member who has made over 350+ straight posts in the For Sale Section without a single post to General Discussion.

Maybe this was not the troll thread that many took it for, nor necissarily that of a SS watch enthusiast. Could be a genuine request for advice so he could decide which old Rolexes to buy himself or how price a TT piece he might have had.

Soly Im around your age and am getting a TT GMTC soon but by the time Im forty Im gonna upgrade to the full YG, I dont think your age should matter too much once youre over thirty on any watch as long as you can afford it sensibly and you like the style.

This is an older thread but I figured I'd offer my opinion.

THere are some TT models that Rolex makes that I actually think are very nice. I'd never wear them though and there are a few factors tied to the reasoning.
  1. Trends. Over the past decade there has been a move away from yellow gold into newer white gold and even platinum. This isn't just in watches but in jewelery as well. Go into a jewelery store and yes you will see yellow gold but predominately you see white and platinum
  2. Misconceptions about age. To many of a younger generation, TT and YG watches speak to older generations. SO even though it was retracted, the comment about an 80's watch still has some merit. TT and Yellow Gold was an "in" thing to a greater degree in the 70-90's then it is now.
  3. Style. This goes back to Trends but even homes, appliances, lighting etc. have gone away from that "brassy" 80's feel into a more modern sleek style that is dominated by stark contrast between brushed metal and black. This ties in directly to the popularity of certain types of watches, ie: SS and black dials. How many of you have an iPhone 4 or even a SS kitchen appliance?
  4. Personal style. I honestly couldn't wear one due to my skin tone.
  5. Cost. Initial costs to purchase a TT or YG model is higher. As a result, fewer buyers do to the cost to enter.

These are some of my observations.

The biggest one though is that TT and Yellow Gold is just not the predominate style anymore.

I'm 31 years old. Before my 16613 purchase I leaned towards SS myself. But then something strange happened, I tried on a TT sub. I instantly fell in love. If you guys have never tried one on, you owe it to yourself to at least give it a try. Run down to your local AD and ask to try one on, you might be pleasantly surprised.

:)

I find nothing wrong with TT, it just allows a customer to enter the luxury of a gold watch at half the price. Rolex TT watches are executed quite well, they look fantastic vs. the competition's TT watches.

That being said I really enjoy my Daytona. I would love to have all gold one day, but I do not know if I would ever let this one go.

Also i'm 27 and love TT maybe I'm getting old but I've always love TT over SS. I also prefer YG over WG or Platinum . The only thing WG I own is my wedding band everything else is solid Yellow gold or TT jewelery wise. All my watches are SS and one TT one day will own a solid gold rolex.
