Fantastic shot! Congrats again on the WG Daytona. That is the best dial combination for this watch.

Thanks! Cool, we must think along similar lines then. Beautiful shot, the white dial looks so crisp under a sleeve. Amazing what some of you guys can get with an iPhone.

can i join the club too?
hiya gang!
amazing watches y'all have in this thread and i hope you can accept me into this club too? it's been a while since i posted one of our neglected watch "rescue" threads. my favorite uncle has had this tt daytona for about a decade and since i love watches he seemed to constantly enjoy teasing me about how little he cares about it and always refused my nagging to clean and spiff it up for him, and seemed to take delight in how dirty and neglected the watch looked as it always upset me. my uncle is a gem dealer and the story behind this watch is years ago a fellow gem dealer gave the watch to him a partial payment on a deal and he accepted it as he didn't have a watch to wear at the time. for years he would tease me that one of these days he will pick up another watch and give this one to me just to shut me up well a couple of weeks ago my uncle showed up at a family party wearing a pretentious looking new cartier pasha. when he seen me he reached into his pocket and pulled out his beat up daytona, handed it to me and said "here you pain in the xxx it's all yours. you happy now?". anyways, here is pics of the watch in the condition my uncle gave it to me. he wore this watch all over the world and never ever gave a second thought to giving it a quick rinse even tho his work brought him to some of the hottest and most humid climates. first thing we did was pull the bracelet and drop it in cleaning chemicals to loosen up the years of grime buildup. after cleaning between the lugs we were able to determine it's a P serial # which makes it the first year of the in-house movement. my Godfather is a rolex trained tech but since he is away on vacation in the USA until august we will have to wait for him to give the movement a cleaning and lube, but a quick check on our timegrapher shows it keeping +3 seconds per day which is fairly amazing considering it's neglect. i dropped the watch head in some laundry detergent for a while and hit it with a toothbrush to get rid of the grime encrusted and especially around the crystal and bezel edge and after a few soakings the head came out perfectly clean. even tho at this point the watch was clean enough that one didn't need a tetanus shot to wear it, the bezel of the watch was still way too beat up looking for the watch to be presentable. i love a bit of patina on a vintage watch but this semi-late model example shouldn't look as if it was dug out of a cement mixer! we took the watch to my Godfather's assistant as he is minding their shop while the boss is on vacation. he took a look at the bezel and said most of the minor wear and damage will clean up with a careful touch, so with a small piece of wood about a 1/2 inch square and 1/4 inch thick he gently massaged the bezel surface with mild compound while keeping the wood surface flat against the bezel surface so as to avoid uneven polishing or damage to the paint filled engravings which he says could happen with a polishing rag. according to him he has done this to both beat up gold and stainless daytona bezels and altho steel is much tougher the results are the same and they both clean up nicely. i'm not exactly loaded with money and don't want to buy a new 18k bezel so i'm pleased that it came out presentable, as the only alternative would be a new bezel. altho hard to capture in the pics, all the original black paint is still intact. this particular model daytona has factory polished lugs rather than brushed, so we we lightly rubbed the rest of the watch head with a jeweler's cloth and mild compound to clean up the stainless. the bracelet was very dirty but cleaned up fine and surprisingly has no stretch so i guess my uncle wore the watch tight to his wrist most of the time. we just gave the gold center links a light polish with the same jeweler's rag and some mild compound and they cleaned up nicely with only a few of the deeper scratches still showing, but at least they are not so prominent to the eyes. the crystal has a few scratches and i suppose i could have that replaced when the watch movement is serviced in august, but at least the watch is no longer an eye sore and presentable to wear now. i hope everyone has a nice safe weekend and enjoyed my contribution to this thread and will let me into the daytona club? best wishes from the tropical south pacific! janice |

Thanks to a trusted seller, Sean Ladnsnaes, I can now join this club! Kudos for selling me a watch that is truly mint, looks like it's never been worn. Great watch for the 911 days!

I call her Rosie O'Donnell 'cause she's heavy....
Whenever they decide to change the font on the SS bezel, I'll be first in line! |
