Very sorry for your loss. Losing a dog/pet is always very hard.
Here is our dog Sassy. She's a Wire Fox Terrier 4 years old. She's our second Wire Fox Terrier. VERY well trained, does not shed, and weighs 25LBS (well, she's a little on the pudgy side right now, have to get her back on the doggy food diet again lol).

Very sorry for the loss of your friend...I can relate.
My 'little girl' (a pound puppy) came home with me when she was ~8 weeks old...she died Jan. 24 2005, a few months shy of her 14th birthday. I was devastated.

But, our new friend (Belle- she found us at the Table Mtn. Animal Shelter in Golden, CO) came home with us and helped us concentrate on the present rather than dwelling on the past. As near as we can figure she's a German Shepherd/Rottweiler/???? mix. She's about 50 pounds and 40 of that is pure sweetness. She has a habit of napping in the middle of the floor on her back all splayed out...very cute. She loves the snow and likes nothing better than a good snowshoe hike. When we go backpacking she has her own pack and carries all her own food, medicine, and bowls.
Here's a picture of Belle on a backpacking trip we took this Summer (near Vail)- she LOVES being out in the mountains.
The only downside to all this...I will be absolutely destroyed when her time comes. But that's the way it goes and I wouldn't trade the time I've spent with my dogs for anything.

I wanted a Bull Terrier since getting a couple of Staffordshire Bull Terriers 16 years ago. And when they sadly died (both reaching 14 years old) we decided to get the Bullies. They are very expressionless, and the head shape is either love it or hate it. They seem to be more placid with other dogs, all Boycie wants to do is play (where the Staffy wanted to fight everything) But they have the name of the 'gladiators of the canine world' so I guess your statement is true

Thanks, Gaby. I will say this, if you get a Golden you will fall in love with it. They are loving and sweet-natured dogs, and smart as whips. My wife and I both love having Bogie around, and Sara gives him an extraordinary level of care, including daily fur and teeth brushings. They do need their daily exercise, they're hunting dogs after all, but if you give them what they need they'll return that care a thousand-fold in love. Great dogs.

Here's Bogie on one of his walks, thoroughly engaged with a squirrel in a tree. The boy goes nuts for squirrels! Lol!

The first Bull Terrier I ever saw was in a 70's TV show called Baa Baa Black Sheep, starring Robert Conrad. He had a Bullie in that show (I think his name was Meatball), and I fell in love with the breed then. You are right about their appearance, love it or hate it, but I'm one who loves them.

The Am Staffs are great dogs too. I had one of their cousins, an American Pit Bull Terrier, and he was a great dog. Very confident and scrappy, but he loved his people.

I like the APBT as well it is just a shame they have got such a bad reputation now, as most of them are lovely. Any dog can be dangerous, and lets not forget terriers, no matter what type of terrier, are killing machines...That was what terriers were bred for to kill things, be it rats, animals, whatever. We are then shocked when a Jack Russell snaps...We bred them like that!
I like all dogs, and when I look through threads like this I like seeing other peoples pets and reading about them, it is really nice being an animal lover.

Well said. Pit Bulls do have an unfortunate bad reputation. Bad owners make bad dogs and we only hear about the bad cases in what I believe to be an irresponsible and ignorant media. It's too bad, because in reality they are loving, good-natured dogs and great companions. They are also incredibly loyal and smart. Really, most of their aggression manifests itself with regards to other dogs, but like you said any dog can be dangerous. Responsible ownership, a lot of love and good socialization are key for any canine.

And it is really nice being an animal lover. I wouldn't be any other way.

The search is on.
We've been talking it over and I believe the breed we're going to pursue is either a Spanish Water Dog, which is nearly impossible to find here in the US and crazy expensive or most likely a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Both are 30-45 lb, wooly looking medium sized dogs that are reputed to be great family dogs, trainable and don't shed (hypo-allergenic). That ought to help with my son's very mild allergies as well, although the Wheaten Terrier's coat requires daily combing. I'm sure I won't mind.
Bandit used to shed like last year's Christmas tree.
So I'm filling my spare time reading and researching and looking for the best deal on a brand new addition to the family. It's been a terrific distraction.
These posts have been theraputic for me. I look at the pictures, read the descriptions and sometimes laugh out loud. The affection for these pets is contagious. It seems the best way to honor the dog is to share the dog.

Meet Juan Pablo

He was 6 years old on October 27th

He bought was our baby for 5 years until our real baby came in April.....he has had to take a backseat somewhat....but I still take care of him as always.

Murphy the puppy is now 17 weeks old. He's developed a strange favorite pastime. He'll jump into the bathtub and scratch at the drain, lick the walls (yuck) then grab a shampoo bottle and proceed to trot around the house with his new prize, head tall, proud as can be.

Sorry for your loss. Here's my bird retreving machine , This is his last season in the field, just to hard on him, if I take him he'll just work himself to death.
12 great seasons in the field with his first hunt at 6 months. So many beautiful animals!!
