Before Rolex I was an Omega Fan (Seamaster and Constellation)then I stored my Omegas and wore Ebels on a daily basis. I also have vintage Hamilton (Thinline and Thinomatic), Gruen and Bulova watches. I thought who needs a Rolex??? Now I have two!!

Tag and Rolex are two differet classes of watches. Tag's are nice but not even parallell with Omega and Ebel, IMO. Wife has a Tag that is TT gold plated with Swarovski crystal MOP dial. Won't find TT gold plated or Swarovski in vintage or new Omega, Ebel or Rolex!!

First "nice" watch was a black face, ss bracelet Tag Carrera. Still have it but it does not get much wrist time anymore. Next one was a polar Exp II that I regrettably traded. Oops!

Started with a Cartier...
which barely ever gets worn now (too small now... thinking of giving it to my girlfriend). Hey Safetrends, my dad has that same watch but with a white dial. You're right, scratch magnet, but a helluva great watch. He absolutely loves it.

My first actual watch of value, was an Omega Constellation, given both me and my brother by my father in the late 60's. Unfortunately, that watch was stolen from me. Later, in the 70's, I purchased a Tudor Ranger 2, which was my first of many such watches of this type. I rememer being very impressed at the time, that the clasp of the Tudor bracelet actually said "Rolex". All the time that I wore this watch, I really felt as though it was a quality piece, well worth the Rolex name:
I wore the Tudor for a few years, then put it away when I bought my first Breitling Colt Quartz. For some reason, including cost and the fact I liked the look of Breitlings, I stayed with Breitling. In 1997, I got a SuperOcean which I wore exclusively for over 10 years. When I could not find a new stainless bracelet to fit it in 2007, that started me on a search for other watches. Since then, I have had 3 other Breitlings. Last year, I started to get a taste for smaller watches, and now own 4 Omegas (3 of which are 36mm), and my Rolex Milgauss at 40mm, which I consider an ideal size. The look of Breitlings appeals to me, but the size not so much. I found that Rolex had a lot of watches of equally appealing style, but in a smaller size. In the past 2 years, I have also become a lot more aware of the mechanical aspect of watches, and the inhouse movement philosophy really appeals to me. I also like how Rolex does not always bow to the trends, such as AR coatings on the crystals, and making huge size watches. Just an interesting note: The Tudor watch I purchased in 1972, cost me $265. Last year, I sold it to a watch collector/restorer/reseller for $850. He had it seriviced and restored and sold it for $2995USD. Apparently it is quite collectible. My Colt Quartz, purchased in the early 90's cost me $575. In 1997, I was able to get a trade in value of $800 from my Breitling AD, toward a Colt SuperOcean which cost $1900. at the time. The same model, now just called SuperOcean, is now $2895. I really love the Milgauss. I simply say that it is the most luxurious watch I have ever owned. Apart from all the mechanical innovations, the quality and feel of this watch always impress me when I wear it. It is one watch that I always seem to crave in one way or another when I am wearing my others. Cheers, Carl

It was different for me...i started liking Rolex in my mid 20s (late 20s now) and for me there was no 2nd best......
I went from a £60 Fossil Watch straight to a £2500 Rolex. Did buy a Tag Formula 1 after my Rolex, so I could use it as my daily wearer and wear my Rolex only on special occasions, however the Tag was returned the next day and have worn Rolex ever since :) |

My first real new watch ( I was given some that no longer worked properly before , just to play with ) I got from my parents , I believe for Xmas or 13th/14th birthday was a digital BULER . My first real expensive watch was a Cartier Santos ( TT , with the little gold screws on the bracelet ) I lost that in rather particular situation . I was eventually reimbursed and with the money I bought as second hand 1603 in 1992 . Still got that watch in a bank vault in Luxembourg , but I recently found out that this branch moved premisses and as they could not get hold of me , the vault had to be broken out and the costs involved seem to be much higher then the value in it . I have fond memories of the watch , but I must find out what it really is going to cost me to recuperate the stuff .

I had a TAG for ~20 years. I bought it second hand and with a battery replacement every 5 years and a service once it still keeps beating!

My first was an Omega Midi Sized Seamaster Pro with blue dial. Then I purchased a DJ with jubilee bracelet and diamond dial. I then sold the Omega but I missed it so much I bought it again but with a Black dial this time, then a Sub LV. Now looking for my next rolex.

I've been busy...
I have a lot of free time - so I've been a flipper for a few years -
Here's a list of what has passed my door in the last 36 months - Former watches -Rolex 18078 Day Date Bark, Rolex TT Datejust 1601, Rolex TT Datejust 16013 3.5ct Diamond Bling, Rolex TT Submariner E 16613, Rolex Black Sub Z 16610, Omega Seamaster Chrono 2599.80, Rolex TT GMT Master II E 16713, Breitling Steelfish, Doxa 5000T Seaconquerer, Omega SMP Bond, Omega Speedmaster Mark 40, Omega Speedmaster Triple Date, Omega Seamaster 120 TT, Omega Seamaster 120 Quartz, Heuer Carrera cal 12, Breitling TT Chronomat, Breitling Jupiter Pilot, Breitling Superocean, Breitling Colt II, Omega Planet Ocean 45mm, Rolex Seadweller, and a bunch of crap. And now I'm back with another Z Black Sub - and actually think I might hang on to it - the last version before Rolex started writing their name all over the rehaut like my kid with a crayon.

Old Omegas mainly.. I hav a few 50's 60's Constellations which I used to wear daily. Then got the urge to buy a modern Planet Ocean, but ended up buying the sub instead, which is now my daily wear.

I had a Swatch back in the 80's. That lasted about 2 years...then I bought a GMT II and that was that .
I tried a Fortis...nice watch...but nothing has ever taken the place of a Rolex. |
