In Asia, I was always being asked how much my Omega cost. I was just polite and said "I do not know, was a gift". Would have felt akward telling Cambodians who make $200 a month, that I paid $1700 for a watch. I would do the same with my Rolex, or just tell them it is a fake I bought at the Central Market in Phnom Penh (where they sell hundreds of fake rolex watches for $40 to $100). In the US, if asked I would probably tell them, and explain that quality cost. As a previous poster posted, how many in the US spend that much money on their TVs, Furniture, weddings, cars, bikes, etc..

Seriously, the high status is whether or not you got a 50 inch plasma on the wall in your living room or den. If you paid $15-10K on a plasma when they first came out then you were the big man on campus. Maybe someone would just assume you wear a Rolex after seeing the plasma. Another would be if you have a blackberry as oppose to the free cheap cellphone they give you for signing up. There are several items that speak success these days. My point is I only share my Rolex obsession on this site. I am impressed by you guys watch collections. This exists on this forum only. I don't talk about or look at peoples wrists. I am very comfy here.

I was initially a little concerned about wearing quite an obviously expensive rolex out in public.

I decided to purchase this hat to take the attention away from the wrist area.

It was quite successful, will lots of remarks about me being a cult.

At least that's what I think they said.

I get uncomfortable when my teachers and friends would spend half a class talking about how rich I was. I dont want it to be known or to be treated any differently. Some people feel that a Rolex should be only worn on special occasions- but why not make everyday special?

I dont suggest wearing a Rolex if you're gonna spend your day in a area where u have a 90% chance of getting it JACKED, but If your going to spend that much money on a watch I suggest you ENJOY it and wear it everyday.

When people ask, you can just say "it's a fake... Got it in chinatown... 50$"
How about a Smith&Wesson 9MM on the hip to discourage the seedier elements of society from considering a so called "jacking" . Like the old saying goes with my addendum "You'll have to pry my Rolex from my cold dead hands"

That's a NICE HAT, WWM!

Yeah, I wear mine pretty much every day. The only reason I don't wear them at work is because I'd hate to scratch one up at a fire or auto extrication... but there have been days that I forgot the "work" watch. My everyday wearer is currently my older GMTII with a zulu strap... looks very utilitarian.

As far as people's questions go, if asked what it cost, I just smile and say, "don't remind me."

I wear mine everyday but it's also a little more stealth...SD + black strap.

Prior to the strap I wore it but the "is that a Rolex" questions did get a little tiresome...

Hey..hold on a second....I'm married two kids (8 and 11), two cats and a bunny and a wife, too.

We both wear Rolex exclusively.

No snobiness about it. As an aviator, having a quality watch is important to me. The past 22 years of dedication, family separation and hard work have paid off. I don't feel bad wearing my Rolex.

While I do agree with most that it does not matter what people think, I must say that to me and me alone, it does matter what the guys at work (who control my bonus, paycheck) as well as those whom I am close with and may not be able to afford such luxury think. I hate snobby people and never show off my watch or anything else for that matter. I whole heartedly agree that you should not worry about what people think but, there are times that I myself do and do not want to portray a certain image.

I do agree that everyone spends on something plasma, cars, motorcycles, weapons, ect, and to that degree you are dead on.

Most of my family can barely afford a Timex but the reaction to my GMT has been overwhelmingly positive. I must admit I did feel a bit uncomfortable at first but everyone wants to look at it, admire it and put it on their wrists. Everyone seems delighted that somebody in the family can actually afford to wear a Rolex.

On a more sinister note, a UK company recently banned certain jewellery items on religious grounds. How long before expensive watches get banned from the workplace in case they "offend" people who can't afford them. You think it won't happen? Just wait a while!

Then they will ban Porsche and Ferrarri at the parking lot.

THE ROLEX FOR ALL OCCASIONS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT:

Sometimes we want to have the “Rolex” look, on the weekends while at a bar, on a date or hanging out at a night club (or strip club); there are other times when perhaps we don’t want the recognition that comes along with Rolex (or maybe just me).
For instance, I do feel a bit odd wearing my GMT II around the office. I much prefer my Explorer II around the office and at the girlfriend’s family. While I personally do not like to “show off” it is rather difficult not to catch a person’s eye while wearing the traditional looking Rolex (coin bezel, black face, white markets, oyster bracelet). Then outside of the watch world comes the “is that a Rolex, how much did it cost”, I for one hate that.
Am I the only one who gets this paranoia about wearing my watch in certain presence (I am sure a Sub, Yachtmaster, TOG ect… would fit into this category as well)? Perhaps others are not as into watches as we are and do not even notice what we have on our wrists?

Curious on your thoughts……..

Is this wrong?

I've worked hard for the things I have. I began working at 15 years old, put myself through college (with help of the GI Bill--4 years Coast Guard), and put myself in a position to be able to purchase these items.

hey i will wear mine!

I am a school teacher. thankfully though being in the field of special education it affords me the ability to do some afterschool work which pays me well. for years i longed for a nice watch finally i bought one this summer. first brietling navitimer world. then was told how i could not get a sub lv b/c i was not vip customer. found one from a great ad i dela with in palm beach. that led to me loving rolex sold the brietling and got a nd sub (on order) for everyday. i will wear it to school. many in my family feel i am nuts but i do not care. b/c prices. i bust my butt and if i want to splurge i will. i also do little things for them when i can (that makes me happier). but wear yours with pride.

Hey BHE nice collection...It's your money and you earned it. I feel that life is too short to worry about what could have been. If your not in over your head with all the toys and have debt collectors knocking on your door then why the hell not . By the way, the Smith is that a 3953? I have a 5946, 3953, .38 Chiefs Special, and a Berreta .22 all to keep my Rollie safe

Hopefully as a school teacher you teach your students how to use capitals properly.

I don't know about the US, but in Ontario school teachers make very good money......

Interesting opinions. I spent four figures on a Sub because I wanted one. Fortunately, I had the funds to do that. As far as the age old question goes, I have never been asked about it. Most of the people I interact with probably wouldn't know the difference between a Rolex or a Timex (nothing wrong with that BTW). In fact, I was in a bar recently with a friend. She wanted to know the time, so she grabbed my wrist to look at my watch. Nothing. Not a comment. The anonymity that my Sub has suits me to the ground. As far as not wearing it around people who can't afford that sort of expenditure on a watch, well if I subscribed to that argument, I would take the bus if my neighbours or friends didn't have a car. As I said at the beginning, an interesting thread.

I wouldn't say paranoia, although I do feel self-conscious when I wear my LV to work. For one, my account managers know how much I make and one of them joked about how can I afford my camera equipment (Nikon D200 w/ several pro lenses) at the company picnic. I'm not sure what he would say if he ever noticed that I had a Rolex. The second thing is that I work for a business that is client-base on an hourly basis. So a client may feel that they are paying too much if their IT guy is sporting a Rolex.

Outside of work, I am proud to wear my LV. I guess the fact that it is a green bezel and stainless steel, the name Rolex doesn't come to mind. And no one has commented on my watch besides jewelery store people. Although I may have to revert back to my Tissot if people start noticing that I am wearing a Rolex at work.

For one thing, I definitly would have a hard time wearing a TT blue sub to work. That thing is too well recognized and it does stand out a lot. Although I would love to have one for the evenings and weekends. :)
