Level of dress vs. level of watch??

I always try to match my watch to my level of dress. However, I say it all depends on what statement you want to make with your watch fashion combination. I love the look of a Daytona (or any of the other Rolex sports models) with a suit because it stands out and makes a bold statement. However, I always think it is most appropriate to wear a dress watch with dress clothes (perhaps a versatile Datejust or better yet a Cellini). I sometimes have trouble fitting the sports models under my cufflinks. The proper sartorial balance between watch and level of dress is very important to me personally but I recognize that I am probably in the minority on the forum. I consider myself more of a fashion guy than a watch guy, so to me the watch is always the accessory rather than the first thing to consider. Just my two cents.

I'm with you taljamil. Clothes first, watch second. The whole thing has to blend just right. The ingenuity of most Rolex design is how they strike the proper balance of elegance...while drawing the eye to just the subtlest detail without being overbearing. If this wasn't the case, an entire bespoke suit can be upstaged by the wrong choice of watch.

This is also why I don't like the ceramic models (will take over an outfit) and why I love the classic designs (compliments both my formal and casual wear).

Stainless GMT for every day work (business casual).
Classic Zenith Elite w/ black band for church, suit coat, and those business meetings I don't want someone noticing my watch - or when I want to down play the watch.

14060 as my casual weekend, pool goofing around watch.
$100 beater on a zulu to the gym.
For me, the perfect rotation.

I love Thursday nights when I come home, take the GMT off and replace it with the 14060 - as that is the start of the weekend (I wear my 14060 for casual Friday at the office.

I know I'm new here, but this was a crazy discussion. I don't have a dressy Rolex, so I don't wear either of my Rolexes to dressy ocassions. My ex has my Cartier Tank, so it isn't available. So, I just rely on the time from cell when I have to get dressed up.

I looked around one day and found a watch on my wrist, a cell phone, and a PDA, all with "time" displayed and all different. At that point I decided that some were fashion statements and some were appliances; I wear the watches when I feel like it but the time is on the Blackberry.

Quite the opposite! I would understand if it concerned a delicate dress watch, but as long as it is a sports model, wearing it means I do not feel underdressed in a lot of situations where I would otherwise.

I think the reverse situation is much worse, where a garish diver is worn with more formal wear. Why not make the outfit complete with a pair of sneakers? I do think the Sub handles itself fairly well in most situations, though.

Dressing up for me is wearing jeans! My "uniform" as my wife calls it, is a pair of shorts, a polo and flip flops. So for me anything goes...I am not a huge fan of YG watches but I do own a TT Sub, which IMO, goes with anything besides a suit and a Tux. For those times I do wear a suit, I have a SS DJ which fits the bill quite nicely.

I have just one Rolex watch so I have no other choices...but one of the many things I love about my Yachtmaster is that it is so versatile. I have worn it with full-length ball gowns, business attire (skirt suits and heels), casual (I wore a sweatshirt and jeans today), and a bathing suit (I wear it while swimming in the ocean or in a swimming pool). Of course, having a stainless steel bracelet helps. If my finest watch were a dress watch with a leather strap I would probably match the wardrobe and watch.

Since I always wear a T-shirt with blue jeans(add a flannel shirt in winter)it doesn't matter to me what type of watch I wear.....I don't pick out my watch to match my attire!!!

The more expensive and blingy your Rolex, the better it goes with shorts and a T-shirt.

I only own one watch, so my SS ND Sub goes with me everywhere and no matter what I am wearing, be it black tie or board shorts

I don't own a gold watch and doubt that I ever will. I don't find myself constrained by other people's conventions on dress. IE: a Submariner is not a dress watch. Says who?
The times I am required to dress up, which for me is a suit and tie, I will probably wear my Daytona, but it just as easily could be another depending on my mood.
