The comments about the Daytona movement are pretty scary. I've relied on an independent watchmaker inspecting the movement in my pre-owned Datejust, but if a nationally recognized expert is the only one who can identify a superb Chinese replica movement, then we're in trouble.
I felt more comfortable when I authenticated my paperwork (filled out in Japanese), but if they can duplicate a movement in detail, they can do paperwork.

I suspect this is the reason Rolex went to a "random" serial number, rather than as a method of hiding the age of the watches in the display case.

The set of legit numbers is probably a tiny subset of the possible numbers, and there may be other information encoded in there as well.

For example...an old Datejust is worth a couple of thousand...a z Sub is worth twice that, or more...

If you can duplicate a case well, then manufacture many of them, cannabalize older Rolex watches with real movements, you can easily double your investment............ but you are doing it by defrauding unsuspecting customers... You could go even further and put fake movements in the real DJ cases that hardly anybody checks out, and still sell them at close to their Rolex values...

whatever. So they then use a real dial, real hands, a real braclet as well ? Just swaping the case and inserting a real movement is not going to cut it. And IF, then what do they do with the real case ? Put a bunch of fake parts on it ? Try to resell it with an engraved serial number ? The whole thing still makes little sense and seems a whole lot of effort for not alot a reward.

After thinking about it...

What if those in power liked your idea and then considered your above action 'hate speech' - what would be your last words before being executed?

It is to bad having a hobby like Rolex watch collecting can turn out to be so difficult. I do like a challange, however, this is like putting a puzzle together just to find out one piece is missing.

I am glad that we have a system in place to warn us about fakes.

You guys dont get it. Some of the fakes look so real to the average guy that they will take it to a shop and have the case opened. Once they see the real movement, any rolex movement, end of investigation. Like Larry said, this is more than replicas which typically are sold to people who fully know what they are. The 3135 clones are ETA 2836s dressed up, anyone who knows anything will tell they are not rolex. So a real movement makes the watch real. The fakes are getting good but not perfect. Crown guards, rehaut, date fonts, other engravings will be off. On a side note, beware of the Dj2 clones...they are freakishly accurate.

SL hands, dial, bezel, crystal and insert cost about $500 brand new.
A used 3135 movement+stem+crown will be around $1700
A fake case and band will be around $300

So you're talking about max $2500 for a Z series sub wannabe.

What would that bring as a trade in , $3700 ?
In a quick sale you can ask $3950

How would you like to be the person who bought this serial number originally from Rolex then it got cloned... He might not even know. But I guess it could have been bought for just that purpose. Who knows.

I saw one here in my neck of the woods 3 or 4 months ago with that serial. The guy would not meet me at the AD because he had to pick up his daughter (BS story involved) but would meet me at a gas station next to it. Also he said he bought it at a Jared that does not carry Rolex. In the end I "bought the buyer" and walked after seeing the watch.
