I normally only start with one and finish with the same one at night, but you're right - the DSSD is the holy grail

I used to wear my favorites all the time, but then the rest were neglected (or at least my mind was saying so) ..........
Now I have to think about what is in the box and force myself to wear the others for at least a couple of days.....

Good question, currently I'm debating selling a large portion of my collection that never sees my wrist to fund a grail JLC purchase. Hopefully THAT will be "the one'!

That's a fantastic collection GJ! If you are happy with them, there's no reason to go for a "grail".
I'm fortunate to feel that the 3 watches I have are all grails to me and I honestly don't prefer one more than the other. Also, because they're all "equals" I don't feel guilty about wearing one more than another. Congrats on your collection! |

I've considered selling all of mine and getting one or two grails, but being afraid to wear a watch was something I promised myself never to do.
I comfort myself in knowing that I am able to appreciate my favorite watches without having to own them.

I have two Rolexes and wear my favorite one every day, It's a GMT Pepsi and my back up is a Sub 14060m(which I have never worn).....I'm very happy with my current watches and I've wanted the Pepsi for over 40 years. There are other models that I do like but you can only wear one at a time!!!

I have been debating selling all my watches except my new Patek Aquanaut to fund a YG GMT or maybe a WG sub. This would leave me without a tool watch but would give me a great SS watch for everyday wear and a special Rolex. I think I have fallen into letting my collection get ahead of me.

That's a terrific collection, G.J.
All you have to do is shut your eyes real tight and think of the 5 watches you have and then think which one would look nice for that day. That's the one you wear!! Works for me!!

GJ...You have a beautifully balanced collection.
Have you ever thought of keeping just one to hand and the others in an inconvenient place.(say at the bank, making it difficult to swap them out so easily)...basically forcing you to wear and really appreciate that ONE for a while. Maybe if they were not in front of you everyday it would help stop the restlessness. Also, when you did have a change, it would be like renewing an old friendship. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, etc....its almost as exciting as getting a new watch, without the monetary pain!!!!!! Time and time again,....... when people on TRF broke up their collections, many seemed later to regret it. Good luck....and i always enjoy your posts. |

I am a newbie and have just one Rolex watch so far - a brand new SS sub 16610 date. But I have plans hehe... a GMT II "M" 3186 pepsi, a yachtmaster... a TT... a 18kt gold...
...rolexitis is such a terrible affliction. What's the cure? |

Great collection and great question!
I've recently embarked on trimming of my collection and rationalizing down to the peices I love most. These may or may not be all "grail" material. Afterall, a watch doesn't have to be a grail for you to love it! I do like the idea of breaking down the occasions for watch wearing and attempting to match those to watches. For me, I think about 4 watches would be ideal: 1. dress watch 2. beater 3. sporty watch 4. special/grail. |

Nice collection! From my own experience, don't find too many ppl who chose to own both an EXP I and a white EXP II (both are very low key watches)
BTW: I am a huge Oranje fan...Sneijder is a genius! I've thought about this too as I now enjoy my sub much more than my 2 DJs and I really want a PRESIDENT! I am not in anyway at all criticizing people who constantly are trading watches, but one is presumably taking a large depreciation hit (even if bought 2nd hand) when selling (esp to a dealer). I guess if one sold on this forum for a similar price bought then it might be better. I guess one has to truly desire the grail above all else such that one is willing to sacrifice a huge monetary loss (in the case of selling your collection)...the emotional value of the grail must really make it worth it. Take my hypothetical situation: I really want to get a YG President (my current grail, yes it is a pretty lame grail, but I am young and rather parsimonious. In reality, a Pink Gold Daytona would be my grail. Don't think I am too blingy as I fancy the 1016 too). Hypothetically: Say the Pres costs 8-9k.. I could perhaps sell my two SS DJ [say 3.5k],the sub [say 2.5k] plus some money to a dealer to get the Pres. Though the enjoyment of my current grail would perhaps equal or exceed the enjoyment of my current collection: I would always think that if I could have originally bought the watches I just sold for the price sold-> then I would have much greater enjoyment than my grail as it would have been a great bargain to get the watches at the prices I sold them at. Sorry for the overwrought post..just suffering from insomnia! I guess I am just trying to say: for me the monetary/value factor in acquiring or selling a rolex is a factor (just one of a multitude of factors) in my enjoyment of the watches. So that is why to me it isn't worth it selling my Rolexes as long as I at least somewhat wear them. Again, most people probably enjoy the thrill of acquiring new pieces...but I just think too much about lost value! |

I hope we all know how lucky we are here, that our biggest problem for the day is...
which of any number of Rolexes to wear. I have had a half dozen of them over the years, now have two, an SD and a Millie. But, I estimate I have over the last 5 years contributed ten times as much to education, building hospitals, building shelters for abused women, providing food for the poor, as I have spent on luxury watches. I figure that's a fair ratio.
Oh, and yes, the SD has sorta settled into my daily-wearer, with the Milgauss lately falling more into formal dress occasions like fundraising dinners and the like. |
