Yup. Despite getting the papers that they hold so precious, I decided to stay in Oz to get some real work done instead of getting caught up having my ass kissed.

For those who think a degree is nothing but some fancy paper that tells people that the person is smarty pants, would you prefer a voodoo doctor to a real one? Or someone without a degree in architecture to design your house, and someone without E.E. to design the wiring. Unless we are talking about the service industry, some profession out there still requires some sort of qualification for the position, in real world. That college degree is like a entrance pass towards those professions.

Without a doubt, Ken, but the situation in Singapore that OBS is describing takes it to ridiculous extremes. Over there, the paper that you hold really does count for much more than what you can actually do, and it gets in the way of getting things done.
Case in point: I recently caught up with one of my old high school classmates, who is a business analyst. He accompanied one of his clients to the Economic Development Board to discuss a grant for an upcoming project. Halfway through the meeting, some punk from the EDB jumped up and asked the client, "What bullshit is this? Who the hell do you think you are?". That would have been fine and well if the client hadn't been in business for twenty years and had a turnover of more than $10 million a year. The fact is that the punk was some government-funded scholar who'd been told by everybody that he was the best thing since sliced bread, and that his little scrap of paper said that he was right and everybody was wrong, even if he had six months' work experience to the other guy's squillions and twenty years in business. Unfortunately, this kind of thing is extremely commonplace in Singapore, where people automatically kowtow to paper qualifications. There are a lot, and I mean, a LOT, of dummies over there who cover their incompetence with paper - it's one of the main reasons why I left that one-dog town. I could have stayed there and had every brown-nosing flunky pucker up and call me doctor, but I just can't bring myself to buy into that BS. As it is, it's rare enough if I use the title once a year, and if I do it's a failure because it means that my qualifications speak louder than the quality of my work.

even better, but your appendage below must be of relevant ratio,i'm serious on this.
but of course if you're either black or white, everyone here thinks your "snake" is around 50 miles long but really, the locals here practice reversed racism, they look up to whites and look down on their own. my friend(white) who was robbed and beaten up had the police come to him to take a statement and they even wished him good health before they left his ward. no such lock for my bro when he got stab, he had to go down to the police station for all that. sometimes its things like these that makes me want to bath with bleach yeah and for those who think the paper qualification means better quality, after my last few visits to the doctor i think i'll need to find a voodoo doctor instead. all they ever do is dump antibiotics on me |

I think the paper is important but I have a saying
"Remember , one half of the Doctors out there graduated in the bottom half of the class"

I have worked a few years in the field of finance and I must admit that without my degree, I would have much harder time getting the job that I hated, any longer in that profession I would probably be popping prozac now. After a few years in it and some proper investing, I decided to call it quits and live off real estate investments, I buy a few luxury apartments each year and flip them for profit (less headaches than houses). Much better money and I don't really have to do anything to earn it other than picking the right place to buy.

The point I'm making is that the value placed on paper qualifications in Singaporean society is way out of proportion to their real value.

Yes, and then he can crow about giving ten billion dollars to the Singaporean people - which is fine as long as you don't mention that he's done that with a trillion dollars of their money in the first place, making the most piss-poor superannuation fund look like a real financial powerhouse.
