That is a great idea.

As for the documents, they are long gone. All I can do is contact the relevant govenment authorities and see if they can provide me with some copies.

This might cheer you up. It's not his best one, but it is fitting given your situation. This guy finds odd ads on craigslist and emails them back to mess with them. Some are laugh out loud funny. FYI, the best is the one about concealed weapons. (can't post that link here).

I scan everything using PaperPort software by Nuance. Everything. That way when I lose it I just have to find the folder on the computer. That is far more difficult than it sounds but in the end it has saved my more than once.
