And, just like you, one out of two isn't bad.

IMO Rolex was probaly the first accurate affordable wrist watch in times where watches were good enough to guess the right hour of the day. Rolex measured the time accurate in seconds, which esp. in war was a solid advantage.

Rolex cleverly build a name in early jet set times. Clever product placement on celebreties and sports added to their name.

Most Rolex are rather discreete watches (not talking about the ones with sickening bling) for a good price. Nice design on most of them and its a real winner.

I do however anticipate that Rolex will die out in the next decade or so since no child or youth I know has any association with the name. They rather buy pop products that reflect the latest trend.
Don't be so certain, there's a strong youth contingent here, and there's still a large number of people who will buy their children a nice watch at age 18 or 21 - that's sometimes enough to get someone hooked on the brand. I know that's what happened to me

In reality I think the thing that makes a Rolex so 'special' is advertising. Because at the end of the day they are an average quality, mass produced watch. But the name is known worldwide, and associated with success and money, very clever marketing.

I really don't see that happening. Mechanical watches have been on the upswing in popularity for a while now, and Rolex is the most recognized of those brands. They'll be around for a long while, IMO.
