I buy watches. If I want a fancy box, I can go buy a fancy box.

Thankfully, I have no need for fancy boxes.

I don't even plan to be buried in a box, much less a fancy box.

I agree with this post with one exception.... I do plan to be buried in a very fancy box. I've already picked it out. Hand crafted by spanish artisans it's totally cedar lined, the lid features pure brass hinges and lock, it's completely decorated with the most amazingly fancy guilded scroll work. I'm so happy with my selection. Of course I have to empty it first. What do you think?

Rolex makes sporty watches (well, mostly). For such watches a beautifully lacquered wood box wouldn't match IMHO. I think Omega, Breitling and Rolex all have the proper watch box design.

What I would probably do though, is supply a different, more luxurious box for all-gold and all-platinum models.

And if you ask me, I'd much rather have a bigger box for the Sub-C, with a nice factory rubber strap and a tool-set included (on top of the regular Oyster bracelet). And get back the anchor, that was a nice touch!

Quite frankly, all of the "other brands" need more appealing box/packaging for marketing and to help make up for their shortcomings. Rolex watches don't need no stink'n pretty boxes!

So right...but...

I've owned Patek's, AP, Vacheron's, etc... All the boxes are very nice polished wood. Rolex boxes look like crap in comparison. But I am buying a watch not a box. I've always wondered if I am paying an extra $500 for the box for the patek or AP. I would rather it come in a cheaper box and have my $$ go for the watch instead. Just my 2 cents....

Chris (GMT Master) got it right when he pointed out that it depends on the numbers produced. Patek and Panerai can use fancy boxes because they each make under 100,000 watches a year while Rolex produces close to a million.

Omega is probably a better comparison and I'd say their boxes are inferior to Rolex's - after a few years in a tropical/humid climate like Singapore's the surfaces start to peel badly.

I really don't care what type of box the watch comes in. I would rather have the watch company spend very little on something like a box and cut down on the cost instead. Like others have said most of us just store the boxes in our closet or throw them out.

Cigar boxes are an art unto themselves. Nice choice.

If I remember correct weren't Rolex boxes originally intended to be cigarette cases once the watch is removed?

It is what is inside that counts.

On the Rolex Forum what would we call someone who posts to arouse an emotional response?
