As long as we're bashing Rutgers, I'll tell you something else that they do that is appalling. One of the current students posted their policy on recommendation letters for Medical School on another forum. They offer a "committee letter" from their pre health committee which many medical schools now require if offered by your university. My alma mater did not offer this ridiculous "service", but that's not the point. Other schools charge a nominal fee for this service, if anything, say $5.
Rutgers charges $200 for the letter AND even though they only submit it once to a central application service, they charge $50 for each school you apply to. It's not uncommon to apply to 20-30 schools. It's absolutely appalling that they steal an additional $2000 from potential medical students who are already spending several thousand dollars on medical school applications. If you are unlucky and have to apply a second time after buffing application, $2000 more. Almost 2/3 of applicants don't get in at all. They are a disgrace.

How else do you expect them to be able to pay 32K for some celebrity to come and speak ?

Unfortunately, it's not. See this article from CNN. When I was a kid, we rebelled and had our "voices of the generation," but they were generally people who protested the war in Vietnam, who organized farm laborers or wrote music about love and peace. Right or wrong, they cared about social issues and their ideals of justice. Snooki and her ilk are concerned with tanning, laundry, drinking and hooking up. Period. Hardly worth a speech at an institute of higher learning. If I was a parent paying Rutgers tuition, I'd be in the president's office demanding a refund.

Another addition to the growing mountain of data proving the end is coming: a new television series on people who clip grocery store coupons. Extreme Couponing is coming soon to your TV. Imagine the tension, the battle of coupon-queen egos, the excitement of the final tally at the cash register. What's next? How about The DMV Line: watch as people stand in line for hours at the Department of Motor Vehicles waiting to renew their drivers license. Coming soon to TLC!

Never seen these shows, and I never will. It's bad enough we as a society idolize real celebs and sports stars (who often are crazy d-bags in real life; ie. Charlie Sheen), do we really need to spend time and money on a bunch of "Nobodys"?? |

It's not like she was a sponsored speaker by the university. She was selected by the student body for ENTERTAINMENT.
How is it any different than hiring a comedian or juggling clown to come to the University? It just so happens she commands a higher dollar figure (which is crazy). Let's not over react here...
