Sounds like a plan! Entry level in the UK is about £100-£120 so not to prohibitive.

Congrats, and glad your strategy paid off.

How long are you planning to keep the champagne? If you plan to drink it this weekend, the fridge is fine. If you're going to save it for New Year's, store it in a cabinet that stays relatively cool, and one that does't have any vibrations. Since you have the box, i'd keep it in that and rest it on it's side. This way it stays dark, and won't get knocked over, only to roll off the counter and break(plus the cork stays wet).

Nothing like a good bottle of Dom to complement a Rolex. Mine says hello.

Store the Dom in a cool place e.g. under your house.
Store it flat so the liquid is in contact with the cork. This keeps the cork moist and expanded to prevent the ingress of air into the bottle.
As to how may years you can keep this I dont know. It will have a limited life much less than that of red wine.
Check out what the experts say as the prime life drinking envelope and enjoy

Excellent story...

That's a lot of work and grovelling for a Rolex, but glad you got what you wanted in the end. I don't think a Daytona steel is double priced, but perhaps 2-3 thousand more on the grey market. Hope you enjoy your Daytona for many years.

Stored under the right conditions, it can last quite a long time. At least 230 years.

This is as good a reason as any to invest in a small wine fridge to store some good wine. You can get a 50 bottle cooler for a reasonable price. Than you can go and get wine spectator and buy a few bottles of something recommended every now and again. Next thing you'll need another and another. One house I looked at had a 2000 bottle cellar. With a little remodel it could have been twice that. It can be a fun hobby. There's something special about buying a bottle of wine for $50 today that in several years time is worth 3 or more times that and pulling it out at a party to enjoy with friends.

Paul,

Why are you fattening up the hottie at Ben Bridge?

Good job ....... and that is coming from a good schmoozer.

Fun going to the VIP events. I would of liked to hear what watch you wore. However, I assume you will let us know when you tell us about the starlit who showed up at the event.

On the nose: you will get hints of almonds, then it opens up with lemon and dried fruits, then the whole will will be rounded off kinda smokey, toasted almonds.
Now, when you drink it, it is immediately captivating. Paradoxically concentrated, yet creamy, very energetic and warm with focus on the fruit.

It holds it's notes pretty good, intensively, with just a hint, albeit subtle underlying bitterness

Late rain in August early September coupled with perfect weather prior to these rains helped them reach the height of ripeness, the harvest began Sept 12- Sept 28th.

Dude, in a nut shell, it ain't to bad. That don't produce a Vintage every year, it's gotta be perfect. I'm lookin for a '99 if anyones got one, thats killer !!

A bottle of champagne kept away from heat, light and vibration will keep for 20-30 years.

Unlike most wine, sparkling wines are best kept upright ... and not on their side. The cork is highly compressed to keep in the carbonation, and keeping the bottle on its side can actually promote cork failure rather than merely keep it moist which is the objective of sideways storage.

Congrats on the DP !!

According to this you should be getting ready to drink a 2002 pretty soon!!...sometime within the next 5 years at most.

If you want to keep it a while, do not keep it in the fridge.
Keep it in a consistently cool (54f/12c) place,on its side so the cork is kept moist,no direct sunlight.

Hi,

Good story! In regards to the wine - Don't keep it in the fridge unless you are going to be drinking it sometime soon, and certainly DO NOT store it in the kitchen window!!

2002 was a particularly good year that they produced thier champagne and it will keep for years if you have somewhere you can store it all year round at a relatively dry temperature.

Failing that, if you want to keep hold of it for any significant amount of time then your best option is to simply keep the bottle in it's box, not standing up, but on it's side in the back of your wardrobe until you are ready to chill and drink it.

Oh, and if you didn't know the value of that particular bottle, it's approx $170.00...

Ok, I'm wondering if I can subscribe to a member instead of individual threads? I just don't ever want to miss one of Paul's stories!

I mean, after clicking... I noticed the length of the post and read the first sentence. I immediatly grinned, sat back and expected to laugh my butt off. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed.

Classic Paul story. I should just make a book out of them.

"A Sony WIS' misadventures in life" (Working title)

Enjoy both in good health buddy!

About the right price give or take 20 bucks, but don't agree with keep it lying on it's side. And it should keep for quite awhile, especially this vintage.

But you could open it now and it would be amazing, lets do it !!

Nice drop.
Me and Monk Dom Perignon have a history, I am engaged to his biggest fan.
1999 VINTAGE PLEASE.
While were on drinking, grab all the 2007 California Cabernet (Napa, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, Rutherford) it's an incredible year, and the prices
are excellent, as there are a ton available. This could be the VINTAGE of the century. Rodney Strong Alexander Valley, Whitehall Lane Reserve; Joseph Phelps Napa, (Kinda expensive) Merryvale, Chalk Hill are great values

Ok, enough, thanks Personally, I like Imperial Nectar Moet Chandon Champagne, it's really a great bottle @ 55 bucks

A quick Google search returns this:

While most wines can benefit from lying on their side, Champagne and other sparkling wines tend to age better if they are kept upright.[1][2] This is because the internal pressure caused by the trapped carbonic gas provides enough humidity and protection from oxygen.[1] The preference for upright storage of Champagne is shared by the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) who conducted an extensive study of Champagnes that were stored in various conditions and orientations. This study found that Champagne stored on its side aged more quickly because oxygen was allowed to seep in after the Champagne corks lost their elasticity due to contact with the moist wine.[
