Too much too soon. Let it be the carrot dangling over his head. It may just be infatuation right now.

There are so many reasons for which I would not buy him a Rolex.
One of them would also be that it would make his life harder. I can't imagine a person who will interact with him who won't hold having a Rolex at his age against him, regardless of the fact that you're responsible for this (as the vox populi would see it) irresponsibility. |

This whole conversation is just silly.
I'm a new father, so I don't have experience with 12 year olds as my own, but good lord, let kids be kids. There is no reason they need $100 sneakers much less thousand dollar watches. |

No I would not buy a 13 year old a Rolex. I may buy one when he's 13, but I would save it for his college/trade school/tech school graduation.

Absolutely no! Get him a Rolex when he turns 18 or 21. A 13 year old wearing a Rolex just sends way too many bad messages!

Maybe set him some target/goal like academic or extra curricular, one that requires at least a few months of dedication with the promise of some reward at the end, be it Rolex or something else.
Now that way at least you get to see him work/apply himself for his reward. If he doesn't commit then at least you save yourself an expensive mistake. But, if he works hard and applies himself, ask him what he would like after those months and see if it's feasible. Quite often but not always, what a 12 year old really wants changes every few weeks I do speak somewhat from experience, i'd wanted a Rolex from a very young age as my dad always aspired to own one and talked about the history and prestige that a Rolex represented. I played around with lower tier watches during my teens with money earned from tennis coaching and had a few Casios, Armani etc, progressively increasing until I saved up enough for an Omega and then onto my Rolex's. By working minimum wage for them I really had time to consider what I really wanted and to appreciate it once I had it. I'm 20 now and even after having my Omega and Sub and GMT stolen (they weren't insured unfortunately), the time and effort I put into obtaining those first pieces allowed me to keep working (still at minimum wage as a student ) to get my Daytona. Moral of the story is, make him work for it |

Wait till the bullies come and break his arm to get it! You would have to be nuts to give a Rolex to someone so young!

i'm going to go against the grain here, but depends on the child and whether he appreciates the watch. i was given a oysterdate at 13, it has stayed with me ever since. it connects me with my old man, and for that alone, ill always treasure it.

IDOTS - It Depends On The Situation. 2 Examples for your consideration.
One Size Does Not Fit All... Example 1, our son did get a watch at that age - within a month he had disassembled it Example 2, on the other hand, I steward open wheel race groups where 15 year olds are beating other talented 20 and 30 something's at speeds up to 180mph. Yes their parents have resources - not a sin last time I looked - but these guys have been mature since their early years in carts. So the real question would be whether he'd be responsible, cherish it, and whether you could accept the outcome of example #1

If it was my son and he was really wanted a decent watch, I'd go the seiko route...and a used one at that for under $150. I'd give him a Rolex when he graduated from University or some similar accomplishment, if he was still into watches by then.

Get him a Seiko SKX and see how he treats that watch. They are fairly inexpensive, and a GREAT automatic watch. If he is careful with it for several years, maybe then you can consider the Rolex.

Absolutely not. In my opinion 13 is way to young to be wearing a Rolex. Why not set some goals for him and if he accomplishes them in the future then consider. I guarantee you he will appreciate it much more if he receives a Rolex upon graduation from college. Gives him something to work for.

Absolutely not. Get him a Seiko auto diver. If he can take care of that he can have a Marine Master or something nice at HS graduation. If he can take care of that, maybe a Rolex at graduation from College.

What does he get next year, a BMW? Life lessons are important. Not the way to go since you are asking.

I dont care who you are or how much $ you may have. Buying a 13 yr old a Rolex is absoulty ridiculous. Its a great way to set a kid up for not appreciating the value of a dollar. I make several six figures a year and my kids have a hand full of toys, no luxury goods, nor cable television or video games.

Get him a Steinhart Ocean-1. Great watch, Rolex like. Good movement. Great for a kid. If he takes care of it, it should last him forever. If he decides he wants a Rolex after that, he can buy his own. He will cherish it because it will represent an accomplishment for him.

If you're just going to give it to him and say "Here's your first Rolex, enjoy," then I'd say definitely not! If part of giving this to him will be to teach him the value of such a nice watch, including how to treat it and how to be responsible with it, then perhaps. Maybe get one for him for special occasions only, not as an everyday piece? Otherwise, maybe there's another transitional piece that you could get him that would begin to give him an idea of what it means to own, wear and be responsible for a "nice" watch, but perhaps not something as expensive as a Rolex. I'm sure you could find an older quartz Tag for next to nothing, which will take quite a beating but still be a "nice" watch.
