Gee Prince, I wish I had your knowledge. I learn something new everyday. In other words, Rolex only made gold filled models NOT gold plated or gold shell. Gold filled watches will NOT tarnish, or flake or show worn edges even after a long period of time. Am I correct?
Sorry to bother you. I promise this is the last question on this subject. |

Reno, I have the same issue. I get the blue wrist on gold plate and I get the black ring around my neck and wrist. Thats why I have to have all genuine gold or steel jewellry. If its a necklace or bracelet then it has to be whitegold for white metal.

Actually, as I grow older, I am a little bit better on the acidy hand issue. When I was a teenager, I couldn't even wear a (solid) gold ring for a month, without having my acid "ate" through the gold and the whole ring would literally fall off from my finger. Now, as long as my jewelry is solid gold or steel, it will stay on me for years. Oh by the way, my name is Tommy. My dog's name is Reno and guess where we adopted him? Thanks for your input. |

Have you ever gone to the zoo and read the sign that said "Please don't feed the monkeys" That's how we like to treat JJ around here. His ego is big enough, he doesn't need for it to be fed.

So, on a gold filled oyster perpetual for the early 70s...would the case appear to be gold from above but when flipped over, the back of the case(not the caseback) is stainless?

You guys are funny!!!
I was on the eBay watch forum and boy, those guys were vicious. IT seemed they were there for the sole purpose of cutting each other down and to insult each other - NOT in a joking way either, rather than sticking to the topic. When a new member complained that he got "rip-off" on eBay by a scam, those sharks came right on top and practically told him he deserved it. I quit after seeing several of those nasty postings. I sure don't need that kind of negativities in my life. Surprisingly, the "boss" of that forum did not try to stop that kinda nonsense. It is refreshing to be at this forum where everybody seems to be friendly and in a good mood. |

Although all current models are solid 18k gold, Rolex has made lots of gold filled watches in past years. Here are a few examples:
http://www.classicwristwatch.com/Rol...Top%201983.htm "The 18K Yellow Gold filled case........." http://www.girards.com/sell/page2.shtml Scroll down to: 2-8 200398 - Rolex Prince Observatory Doctors Watch This one is from the man himself, James Dowling: http://www.ukwatches.com/Rolex1.html Unusual Rolex Perpetual with US made GF case "This watch has a US made gold filled case made so as to avoid high US import duties in the 1950s/1960s; although Rolex USA were still offering these watches as late as the early 1980s. The movements, dials & hands all arrived separately in the US, and by assembling the watch in the US (at their 5th Avenue HQ) in a US made case Rolex were able to claim that more than 51% of the value of the watch was US production and so evade the high import duties of the time."

Ah, so Rolex does have some models which it labeled as "gold shell". Gee, I thought I was crazy because I swear I had seen that term before with Rolex. Those two terms, to wit: gold shell and gold filled, are interchangeable by the company but they are the same.

To attempt to get on topic for a second. In one of Reno's posts, he asked if there was any watchmaker that may be able to repair his bubbleback. I can't recall (but I'm confident members of this forum will) the Rolex recognized "vintage" repair sites that have parts that are hard to obtain, etc. I know the two centers have been posted on this site many times but can't remember the addresses. I know one is in Chicago, so maybe someone can pass the info along to Reno. Thanks, and welcome to the forum Reno.
Now it's time to post a picture of that collection! |

My collection is really nothing fancy. I don't even own a President (day/date). I do have several 2 tones Datejusts - with different color dial; a 2 tone GMTII; several European and Canadian models (Victory, Skyrocket); several Rolex pocket watches in 9K from Australia; a couple of Cellinis; several SS models, e.g. GMTII. They are all locked up in my safety deposit boxes in different locations so it is very difficult and inconvenient to take pictures of them. I NEVER leave anything that is valuable at home.
To my horror last week, I received a letter from the bank where a couple of safety deposit boxes were, I was advised that the bank had inadvertantly drilled open my boxes on February 27, 2007. And that letter was dated May 11, 2007. It took the bank almost 3 months to inform me of their error. Meanwhile, all the contents in both of my boxes were safeguarded in the bank vault. I rushed down to the bank and got really upset with the branch manager. I could understand the error of drilling open my boxes, afterall, we were only human, but why it took 3 months to notify me? That, to me is a total gross negligence. Foruntately, most of the contents were accounted for, save for a rare coin which I was NOT 100% sure if it was in those two particular boxes. To compensate for their mistake, the branch manager issued me two(2) $100 Visa gift cards. I was really considering to retain a lawyer to sue the bank, but since I did not suffer any significant losses, I didn't think I would get anything out of the lawsuit anyway. I eventually dropped that idea. Has this ever happened to any of you guys? I can't wonder if the government (e.g. Homeland Security) was involved in this. I can see drilling open one box by mistake but two? |
