Yes, I hear that in Australia they are dropping the price of the SS Daytona by 30%.
Probably to clear out stock before the ceramic model arrives Chris.

It's pretty obvious that prices simply relect supply and demand..... whether that demand is simply market led or through a manipulation or restriction of supply, it will have an impact on the price of anything....whether it's a new model car, TV, real estate, gold, diamonds whatever.... this is a matter of fact.

A new model Rolex will inevitably impact on the demand and therefore price of the old model.... at least in the short term. New buyers will in most cases wait to have the new version and this will inevitably lead to reduced demand for current models even with Rolex restricting supply. This is simply human nature and the desire to have the latest "showpiece" will also result in the flippers out there looking to off-load the current model leading to greater supply on the pre-owned market too.

With an iconic model such as the Daytona, this pent up demand will influence Rolex in their pricing and I can see it coming in at quite a premium for the early birds..... and a reasonable discount for the previous (non vintage) model.

Therefore, if you do want to take advantage of market timing, my own view is that....if you like the current model, wait for the glut of pre-owned to come on the market or discounts from AD's. If you like the new ceramic model, wait for the initial "I must have one to show my friends" rush has been satisfied and buy from the "bought but can't afford" brigade who will be listing them for sale within a few months of buying.

But what do I know.......

Seriously I am not convinced we need a ceramic bezel on the Daytona... The only certainty it will do is to bring the Daytona on another price plane, which is bad news for Rolex lovers.

A black aluminium bezel will do as fine...

For now, I am holding onto my 116520. Regardless of how received the new Daytona would be, I don't think we will witness a $1-2k price drop in 116520. And given the trend of 5-10% increase in rolex prices each year, holding onto the 116520 makes better sense.

There seems to me to be a new population of Daytona haters emerging- just an observation from someone who does not own a modern Daytona nor will ever purchase a ceramic one.
As usual Ken; the voice of sanity. However long Rolex make Daytona's, there will be people willing to pay good money for them.

Never got the urge to get the sub c. And the value of the old subs keep going up. I paid
full MSRP in 2004 for a crazy $4250 for my sub. A new sub c might go to 10K by the time the new daytona comes out.
Then you have to ask yourself 10K for a new sub in the future vs 10K for a preloved daytona.
Hmmm I think the 10K daytona may win more times than not. The value will still be there for the Daytona IMO.
Agree 100%

Do we ever need a fraction of the upgrades and modifications to any of the consumer goods we buy....

It's all done in the name of getting you to part with your hard earned..... no more ...no less. After all, even though we all love Rolex watches, Rolex is just another corporation we are dealing with here with bottom lines and profit maximisation as their main focus.... After all and, lest we forget or, indeed, like it or not.... if you buy a new Rolex, you are a part of the production line and just another end user.

There will always be an new upgrade or enhanced modification or slight tweak to the shape or design. Otherwise their business would grind to a halt. Existing buyers are one of their main sources of new business and a new model is the best way of getting repeat business. If they could rely on new business from new buyers, you would rarely see any change in model design and all of their budget would be spent on marketing to more and more potential new customers.

The only risk of introducing completely new models is the potential to alienate the existing customer base who may feel the "new" current model they have just paid top dollar for is suddenly "old hat" and a depreciating asset like a car.

In actual fact, IMO, it would be without the internet and forums like TRF where we have created our own pre-owned market place to help support prices. Without this, pre-owned would be way below where they are now.

That's why I personally favour vintage since you are as far removed from the business end of the conveyor belt as humanly possible

Time will tell. I have one, and I am rather pleased regardless. I smile everytime I put it on.
