I too wanted to White face Exp II, but it was almost a toss up between the Black face and white face. Went to my local AD and they had both. Tried them on and then was really confused. Looked at the price and the black dial was $600 cheaper, guess which one I bought.

THat is kind of strange they would price the white one higher. They both should be the same price.

In August 2004, I had in fact picked up a white Exp-II; but when I took it home, discovered (to my horror) that it had a large gash across the black coronet on the dial (when I checked under a 10x loupe).

I was so disgusted that I took it back, but no replacement was possible as the papers had already been signed and stamped.

So the AD sent it off to Rolex HQ, Melbourne for a dial replacement. The watch comes back 10 days later with a dial marked only SWISS. Obviously, someone cocked up in Melbourne.....so back went the watch for a proper dial.

Finally it came back 3 weeks later with the correct SWISS MADE dial. All this run around pissed me off and I finally sold off that DEVIRGINISED watch after a few months.

Now I crave it back, especially after I tried on a brand new, Z-series one this morning.

JJ
Me I went and tried one on today.

Wow I go out of town for several weeks, I get a minute off to check my
E-mails ECT and what do I see? JJ has the Rolex bug again, good to have you back your last e-mails prior to my departure were sounding un-JJ like I am sick of Rolex, should not have flipped so many, a pair of _ I _ S and a Rolex brought you back. It's good to have you back JJ. Next time you start feeling weak I will send a girlfriend over to help keep you on the right path. Welcome back my friend.

One of the only watches that I sold that I wish I would have kept, great watch with a stealth factor for sure.

Yes, I remember that one, Daren. In fact, at one time I remember you had the white Exp-II and TT Blue Sub combo. Is that right?

Black, brown, green, blue, red leather .... all will look extremely well !! A Jubilee too.I would use a pull through leather strap to give the Expl II a bit more height.Although,I would have great difficulty in removing the Oyster bracelet because it looks fantastic with it ....

When I was buying my White face EXP-II and was doing an A-B comparison with a black one, the AD (as well as a few others I've called) mentioned that the black face was more expensive. By about USD250 or 1,000 Malaysian Ringgit due to the higher demand for the black face. Though I could afford the extra USD250, I decided to go for the white as I'm sure I'll regret it once I got home with the black face.

It's just economics I guess... Demand and supply.

If this board is any indication, the white face is more popular, hands down.
Maybe they were BSing you, trying to get you to buy one of the slower selling black faces?
I get this kind of crp. from AD's all the time, like every time I visit one.
In everyday life it's called lying. Larry.

I don't think so Larry. On the day I bought my white face EXP-II, I called at least 5 ADs and only one had both models in stock. The rest were on waiting list for the black models and had only the white faces.

When I arrived at the AD, the white face was on display whilst the black face was in the safe and I had to request that it be taken out for me to have an A-B comparison.

Basically all the ADs I went to said the same thing so I don't think it was a BS thing !

I sold my Exp 2 white dial six months ago. Once the deal was completed and saw my lovely watch walked away with a strange right away I feel I want to buy it back from the buyer.
Six months later I finally got a black dial and two weeks later I bought a white dial. Now I'm a happy guy with my white dial and my wife enjoy her black dial as well.

I like the white.... I tried one on and found it had a great wrist presence... I was impressed big time. I also tried on a Sub no date and have to say I do prefer the black Sub on my wrist.

I think sometimes the brilliant photography one sees of some of these watches can push you over the edge into desiring a certain piece you otherwise might not have bothered looking at.

I myself feel that the WHITE Exp-II, diverges from the traditional Rolex look, and starts blending toward other manufacturer style watches. I would never buy an Exp style watch, unless of course, I could make money on it.

O.K. Gentlemen, it looks like I was mistaken, I did not realise the black dial is more popular in Asia.

I have been shown the two side by side at several AD's here in L.A. and told that they are the same price. Last time I saw them they were both
$5,000.- Larry.

I don't like the painted hands on the white dial EXP II . I think Jocke has a pic of how bad a job can be done on them.

I love my Explorer 2 Paleface. My brother, (who got me started buying Rolexes) said he definately wanted the blackdial, but is vascillating between the black and white dial after I sent him a link to an article on Explorer 2's. I find the Exp2's weigh a few bits less than a sub, and have a smoother profile with its sloping bezel. Plus the 24 hr hand is a bonus for timezone transversers. Its not as dear to buy as the SS Daytona or a sub. Stationary bezel is to my liking as I'm not a bezel fiddler.
Fortunately, my eyesight, while in decline, is still good enough to read the time at a glance. I think its rather elegant in an understated way. Its been a very nice addition to my little collection and is the "beater" of the collection.

I recently purchased and then sold my EXP II White dial..I loved it and then got bored with it..I think the bezel gets lost in the watch under different light conditions..The numbers on the bezel seem to vanish under bright light and completely change the look of the watch..Under low light the watch looks great..The look of the watch got so inconsistent for me I ended up selling it..However after looking at the photos under the right light I am really missing it.
