The Sub is a sports watch, but wear it whenever you desire.

Don't care myself what I wear with a suit or tux. For those that do the Sub c is not a dress watch and should not be used as such.

While the Sub is indeed a very versatile watch, a formal dress watch it is not. The Sub C could perhaps double as a bit of a dress watch but for formal occasions, as stated previously, it draws too much attention to its sports heritage.

+1 on the older Subs (and certainly GMTs) being able to pull off doubkle duty better than the maxis. I am drawing a fine (subtle yet significant) distinction betwen dress and formal wear. Most Rolex sport watch easily do double duty as casual and dress but once thing gets seriously formal the Sub's formality becomes strained; James Bond notwithstanding.

If prince William could wear an omega seamaster (quartz-gasp!) to his wedding then I think a sub to a royal wedding is perfectly fine.

I read somewhere that a gentleman in formal attire shouldn't wear a watch because a timepiece indicates that he has somewhere else to be and isn't giving his full attention to the event.

This is the only watch one should wear to a formal event...

That watch has sentimental value to him but we can't ignore the fact that he was born rich. When you are that rich you can wear anything you want and it might even become a fashion trend. Notice how people follow crazy fashion or acts if RICH celebrities wear or does it Money makes the world goes round MOST of the time.

I wasn't born rich ( nor am I now rich) but I feel I can wear anything I want as well. The difference is I may not be invited back!
Seriously though these days I really don't think too many people are going to get their knickers in a knot if you wear a sporty watch to a formal event, as long as it's not your gshock or other such rubber/digital watch.

Any Rolex for dress or casual. That's what is so unique about Rolex. Can't say that about many other luxury timepieces. I've seen YG presidents look great with jeans and an Expy II look great with a tux!
