Dont be afraid be vigilant. I would say 99 percent of all gang bangers could not even hit the side of a barn with a pistol. Funny you should say that, I was in a sketchy grocery store a couple weeks back and felt very safe with an Aquanaut on. I think imwould have been nervous with a Rolex.

@princeton3 yes it was through hard work. I worked my ass off to do good in high school and I told my mom I dont want a car since the Boston area has convenient public transportation, so she took me to Aruba and bought me the DJ II I remember when I picked it out and everything.

Please be careful. I certainly don't want to get too off topic, and I respect your opinion, but, as someone who has had a guy come out of nowhere with a .45 in my face as soon as I got out of the car, all the while sternly repeating that he was going to "muthaf%#^ing kill me," I could have had a Rambo-sized armory on me, and it wouldn't have made a difference. Despite being in a relatively well lit, heavily travelled area in a popular restaurant parking lot, he put the gun against my head and patted me down, and I was lucky to get out alive (car and wallet were stolen.) It all happened very fast. Plus, I've spent a reasonable amount of time at an indoor shooting range in downtown Los Angeles, and you can bet that some gang members get their shooting practice in, too.

I think the OP is wise in considering new watch options, if his instincts are telling him things feel unsafe.

p.s. I'm over 6 feet tall, have had martial arts and boxing training, and none of it would have mattered. Please play it safe, everyone!

14060M or Sea Dweller. Both will fly under the radar and aren't blingy. If you need a date the SD comes without a cyclops. I think "cyclops" is what tips a lot of thugs off that it's a Rolex.

When I wear my Breitling SOSF I get a ton of people noticing. You do not want that! What about Daytona? I think to a lot a people the dial may throw them off into thinking it's just another cheap watch with super-complicated and cluttered dial, at least at first glance.

If it were me I wouldn't risk wearing anything too high value. If having a fine piece is part of the criteria then pick-up a used Omega Seamaster or Speedy... something that you'd happily give-up if you're held-up and can recover from financially. Otherwise, maybe something cheap? You can still have class and wear something like an issued military quartz on Nato for less than $150. And it'll keep better time!

@megalobyte I know it sounds funny, but I'm one of the few people in my generation that is going to college (I'm 19), and I have a lot of cousins. Some of them dropped out of high school and others dropped out of college. Out of the 23 people in my generation, less than half of us went to college or even managed to do well in high school, but we're all making a living in our own ways. The weird thing about my family is my parents couldn't afford a crib for my brother, who is 7 years my senior, when he was born so he had to sleep in a box and today we're off buying Rolexes, Cartiers, and Pateks. Anyways, is your handle related in any way to King of The Hill? I'm liking the suggestions, you guys are pushing that steel sub with no date and the explorer hard lol they seem nice. Does anybody have any suggestions for another high end watch brand or would it be wise to continue buying Rolexes?

@douglasf13 You got it right I dont wanna risk anything at all so there are just some days where I refuse to wear my watch. Speaking of Rambo, I'm surprised there's nobody like him (well kinda) in the sense of his reactions, like in first blood when they wanted to shave him he had the flashbacks and instantly turned into a killing machine. I think the same thing can happen to veteran and he might react the same way. Anyways, what gwozhog said is right in its own ways but my side of the state is a little too blue to allow me to carry a concealed fire arm. I would love a tazer/stungun for protection purposes but they are illegal here the beanbag gun is also cool because its powerful. Well, I want a watch thats not to noticeable like my brother's Cartier. It's yellow gold with a leather strap and even from close up people don't really know what kind it is, so he tells people its just a timex.

That's what I do, and as an attorney I go to some pretty slummy places and it does increase the risk of whatnot, but I only live once, I'll give up the watch, and get right about 27 grand if it happens. Hmmm... what would I get to replace it? Prob diamond daytona or another DD, but at least it's not robbed by FEAR sitting in my gunsafe.

I'm not one to say you can't get another nice undercover watch. I can totally see the time and place for such. I'd say either a SUB or a DJII steel. get the diamond dial (i'm also a sucker for 'em) cause that's not as noticeable as the yellow gold in the band or case.

Those are my rolex options, but I'm wondering what other watchmakers I should consider. I'm eyeballing the Calibre de Cartier Steel and Pink Gold mens watch for $12,000, but the price point is just at my maximum and the other posible option would be the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph. Does anybody have any other ideas? I'm considering Breguet, but I haven't really heard too much about them and Breitlings seem a bit goddy even though I'm a bigger guy with a wrist to accomodate a large watch.

P.S.

A possible to solution to my problem would be to hide my watch underneath my hoodie or jacket, seeing as winter time is a comin to New England soon. Even then, its a risk when you're walking with something that costs as much as car or downpayment for something. Ultimately, I would want something more subtle than my DJ II, but I am conflicted because I am not sure which watch to go for. I'll be checking around NYC on one of these upcoming holidays to try them on, but as TRF member among many I'd rather consult you guys first. Also, because my schedule for classes is Monday, Wednesday, Friday I am only able to wear my rolex so much and sometimes I find it stopped. Is it bad for my watch to stop and start so many times? I figure it would be detrimental to the mechanism unless its ok because it is an automatic time piece. Thanks for your time!!!

Buy a pair of ETUR ends and put a rubber or leather strap on it .Many people in general from my experience see that OYSTER bracelet as a sure sign of a Rolex, so no Oyster less likely to get noticed.Since I've switched my watches over I get zero comments re; my watches.My GMT with a red rubber doesn't get a second glance except by me.
