I think the difference is that Sports Watch is a descriptive term not a proper name. Using your analogy, calling someone John who is actually named Steve would be like getting a Submariner and calling it a Daytona.

I stand corrected as you found an official document on this watch.
Because of the name of it. YOu made my day. I must put this on my wish list.. The term is still used in a very nebulous fashion.
If anyone has one of these, they then have a sport model..
If I make it to UK, I will be happy to buy you a pint.

If you care what other people think of your watch, then IMHO you're buying it for the wrong reason. The Rolex series of Professional watches are not what I consider dress watches. They are "sporty" watches that are very expensive. But then again, so is the AP Diver which is considerably more expensive then any of the SS Rolex Professional series watches.

I've never seen a Cellini on a bracelet, but I said generally.

I don't really understand why "WE HAVE TO" call them professional because rolex wants us to...

Here you go, plenty of them:

I do suggest that if you have eaten breakfast, then do not look
http://www.watchesbin.org/ROLEX-Cellini-81548.html

(I think the above website should be renamed to garbagebin )

http://www.halmartins.com/rolex-cell...ch-6673-9.html

We have to call them professional because that's what they are, arn't they?
Rolex has given them a name. THat's the lingo they use.
That's what Rolex calls them and when you go to an AD and ask for sports series, they will politely remind you there is no such thing. THey will say "oh you mean the professional series"

If you are going to Paris, then you should learn the lingo or you will get dirty looks-- When at an AD, you are in Rolex Land and you should speak Rolex Lingo.

But if you lay down a ton of cash on the table, you do not need to spak any lingo. The lingo of Green is universal!!

Rolex is a luxury brand, no doubt in my mind.

Whilst holidaying in the middle east this summer I noticed a lot of Rolex TV adverts and the theme was all about luxury and "exclusivity". Gold and diamond encrusted versions were the order of the day.

TRF members, however, label the SS Sub, SD, Exp and Daytona "Sports" models.

You'll have a hell of a time telling us/them how to think and what to call things.

Good luck with that.

Rolex does NOT make sport watches. They do NOT mention Sport watch in their literature. They make Luxury Watches for the professional.
If anyone can find where Rolex Officially (not some untrained person at an AD) but Rolex officially calls any of their watches "sport watches, please post it. .
To think that when I wear one of my Rolex, someone may come up and say "hey, nice sport watch" makes me cringe.. Cheapens the brand.

If they make Sport watches, maybe they also have Economy watches.
ARG!!!!!
It's an old WIS term from many years ago. Many authorized dealers still seperate and display them as their sport watch line. Back then they were in the hundred dollar range. They became a luxury brand over many years of jacking their prices up.

you can certainly describe your watch however you like. it appears though that there is some anger in your statement and i can't imagine that it derives from what someone might call your watch.

everything is and always will be based no our own individual perspective. that said, just because we say or even believe something does not necessarily make it so.

as an above poster mentioned, these watches are all pretty much designed and presented as watches to wear while performing activities such as diving, climbing and exploring. while this is not "football" they would certainly be classified as sporting type activities.

nuff said.

I let no one define my vocabulary. If the word carries the meaning I want to the recipient, it's the right word. here, on TRF "sport" carries that right meaning so it becomes my right word. No concern here from what rolex marketing means by their words...

It doesn't bother me either way.

BUT, I have a sub and don't consider it a sports watch. Mainly because I don't consider diving a sport. A hobby or pastime but a sport??
Just my opinion.

I do, but I always have a computer as well since the dynamically calculated bottom time usually lasts quite a bit longer.

I think I've dived all my watches, regardless of their intended use. (I'm sure the watch police will have a thing or two to say about that as well.)

The oldest definition of sport in English (1300) is of anything humans find amusing or entertaining.[1] Other meanings include gambling and events staged for the purpose of gambling; hunting; and games and diversions, including ones that require exercise.[2] Roget's defines the noun sport as an "activity engaged in for relaxation and amusement" with synonyms including diversion and recreation.[3] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport

Seems to me Rolex is truly a Sports Watch for all occasions.I was wearing mine watching the World Series just the other night

All the "Ads" for Submariner have been DIVING ads....that's a sport to me.
I will always consider a Sub a Sport (say Tool if you like) watch.

A quick google search for Submariner Ads...
Maybe that is why SOME of us don't like the way the new Rolex Sports models are being designed.

You maybe right...only the ORIGINAL watches were true sport or tool watches????

One of my mountainbike rides would most likely put my SD to sleep. But I do consider it a sporty looking watch anyway.
