Oh Fillip, they knew very well."Bad planning" the official reason. The truth is 80k Boers were winning against 356k British soldiers. They were losing the war, before the concentration camps were created.A child under 5,did not make it.Simple.14 of my direct family died in the Vereeniging concentration camp alone.Their names are inscribed on the memorial A quarter of the nations women and children died in the camps.
From this, the sense of self protectionism ,arose which played a large part in the history ,later on. Perhaps this is not that well known. |

"O Boere taal ,jou het ek lief,bo alles" "Oh,Boere language, you I love above anything else" 9 out of 10 that died in the camps were children ,under 10 years of age. We had to apologize for Apartheid for decades, yet NEVER did we receive an apology. "The Scorched Earth" ... a wonderful documentary regarding this subject. Also,Deneys Reitz "Commando" an excellent read, about the experience of war through the eyes of an 18 year old soldier.Fascinating. |

Wow -- you are the real deal! Afrikaner History Origins of ethnic group Afrikaners are descended from northwestern European settlers who first arrived in the Cape of Good Hope during the period of administration (1652–1795) by the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC). While the original settlers came mainly from the Netherlands, their numbers were also swelled later by French and German religious refugees. Their antecendents were primarily Dutch Calvinists and Flemish, together with smaller numbers of German Protestants, French Huguenots, Frisians and Walloons. Romanticised painting of an account of the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck. The original intention by the Dutch who first settled at the Cape in 1652 was to establish a geographically limited refreshment station for the Dutch East India Company. The arrival in 1688 of a small group of French Huguenots who had escaped Catholic religious persecution added new blood and increased the settlers' numbers. Some of the colonists from other parts of Europe (e.g. Scandinavia, Portugal, and Spain) were later also incorporated into what today comprises Afrikaners. The first person on record as referring to himself as an "Afrikaner" was Hendrik Biebouw, who, in March 1707, stated that he was an Afrikaner and did not want to leave Africa. Biebouw meant by this claim to resist his expulsion from the Cape Colony, as ordered by the magistrate of Stellenbosch. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrikaner

Didn't know about the concentration camps.
We can only imagine what went on in those places except from books and movies. Schindler's list was partially based on interviews with all remaining survivors who wanted to have their memories recorded for mankind, so we will never forget what we are capable of. 6.5 million people still speak Afrikaans to this day? Some words are really funny for dutch speaking people, like 'dustbin' cannot remember in Afrikaans |

the only country to have ever burned down the White House.

My Brother's wife is from Scotland! Her family is from North Berick (sic?) and still lives there. Was a great traditional wedding my brother had over there about 7 years ago. We all wore Tuxedos and Kilts for the wedding. I was the Best Man.
I got in trouble with a couple of the Scottish Blokes who worked for me in Iraq. LOL I was telling them how my Brother and his Scottish Wife have a Daughter (5yrs old) and Son (4 years old). I was telling them how my niece will state she is Scottish and say but that her little brother is American. The Scots working for me asked why that was so? I replied "well, my nephew has a set of balls!" They did not talk to me for several days! |

Yeah, I was running scared from those Scottish Blokes more than I was the Iraqi Insurgents over the next week! LOL But, they set themselves up for it! LOL To be honest, there has not been a Scottish Bloke I have met yet that I dont like, same with the Kiwis. And the Kiwis, Brits, and Aussie I had on my project were the best! The Kiwis were always laid back and did what ever I asked of them "No dramas Mate" Great group of guys. I had a great time in Scotland. What a beautiful country! Can't wait to get back to Scotland (and South Africa as many of the above post have ben talking about!). LOved driving around Loch Ness area! One of these days want to hike the entire length of the Scotish Highlanders Trail in one setting. |

I spoke with a french retired guy when traveling in India. He rode through the entire world (one trip was from Mexico to Chili!) on a bicycle and said New Zealand/Australia is great but the most beautiful country/part of the world was Tasmania? Did mention the winds were horrible at times in the mountains. Anybody ever been there? Am thinking of moving to New Zealand/Australia in a couple of years, maybe Tasmania if it is that beautiful. |
