I imagine y'all wouldn't mind trading places with me during the afternoon "chore" at Bob Ridley's: opening incoming shipments? Today's jewel was an untouched Tropical 5508, a real beauty.

Hi Bobbi,
My 16760 has made the trip to Arlington, and perhaps was even "Jewel of the Day"...

Err Buddy Cruvon...you asked for it...
Here is one from Orchi...in RAW as is conditions...
probably heavily used in fair wear n tear conditions...
during its past history...

Even its Original paper came with the watch...
when Orchi got it not too long ago...

Here is the watch's Cirriculum Vitae...or CV

5512 with clear S/nos. 1,4xx,xxx
+ Cal.1570 movement nos. 5400x (Early 5 Digits only) signed "ROW"
IF not mistaken...this would be one of the 1st n only batch of Gilt Dial 5512 Submariners...
using the Cal.1570 Chronometer grade movement...
+ Like "Spider web" Crazing/Fading Non-CR(Chapter Ring) GILT 4-Liner Dial(2-Liner SCOC in Silver)...
+ With full fluffy luminous markers still intact...n the Tritium lume markers are glowing...
+ Caseback correctly stamped "5513" n "I.66"...
+ C&I USA Riveted band is in presentable condition marked "'67"
+ Matching hands...n Super dome Plexi(maybe T#19)...n matching bezel with "kissing 40"...
+ Its original Chronometer Certification Booklet...
indicating the watch was 1st sold by Peoples Jewellers...
of Sarnia-Ontario Canada...
+ The watch case is loaded with fair wear n tear conditions after long period of usage...
probably as a tool watch...
The case has fair amount of raw scratches...dings n dentings...rough edges...
n the end of lugs have signs of worn off edges due to abrasion with the bracelet...
+ What's even more interesting is that the rear of Caseback was engraved with user's name..."FRANK HENRY"...
err...maybe the 1st owner of this watch was a French Canadian...?

Hopes you would enjoy these pictures as much as Orchi has enjoyed wearing the watch...
regularly...

Thanks very much for watching...
Any feedback to discuss about this watch is most welcome...

Best regards
Orchi.

Oh btw...for those that might wonder about what's with the "ROW" signature stamped on Vintage Rolex Cal. movements...
Orchi learns since that it was a signature that RSC in USA/North America could identify...
if the particular Rolex watch was "legally" imported by Rolex USA...originally or not...for North America markets...
between the early 50s n prior to the Mid 1960s...
due to higher taxes in these markets...back then.

Many watches were otherwise imported(minus paying the taxes)...
by other means...at the time also...

Those Rolex watches that were distributed to markets elsewhere in the world during that era...
would NOT carry this signature "ROW"...originally on its Cal. movements...

Similarly...Patek Philippe or Omega or Vacheron Constantin...
n the other brands of SWISS watches..
would also carry their own 3 alphabetic coded signature on the movements...
during that past period of time...

Best regards
Orchi.

That's quite interesting Orchi, did know the first models of Breitling's Navitimers in the early 50"s had "BOW", the US import code, stamped on their movements sold in the United States. The later Breitlings, sometime during 1957, had "WOG" for the Wakmann company that distributed them to get around US restrictions I guess. Didn't know Rolex had "ROW",thanks for that. Any idea if that's an abbreviation for something since B=Breitling, W=Wakmann and R=Rolex, and does "OW" stand for something? (Overseas Watch?:))

Here's my 1675, purchased in 1961 in Singapore, and never knew it was supposed to be a classy watch! Been in many ships (especially subs) and recce aircraft and dozens of foreign countries. Add to that many a smelly gym locker and golf bag. Been slapped around a ton, but still on my wrist and still ticking. This watch doesn't understand pretty.

Yep, Roadie, bought it new at a recognized big jewelry shop in Singapore during a port call there in 1963. Still have all the papers, even the receipt.

roadie: correction to my initial post, which said I bought it in 1961. That was its build date. Bought it in March of 1963.

roadie: too hard on the history. Long tours in Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Scotland. Temporary duty in 21 other countries. A few months apiece in six subs, one carrier, one destroyer and many recce aircraft. Lot of air and river time in Nam. Did an enlistment of a sailor at the bottom of one of the Gatun Locks in Panama (it was of course empty for maintenance!), which no other Rolex has probably experienced! Been above the Arctic Circle. Lots of time at 6 Oktoberfests in Munich. Too many other sea stories to get into. This puppy has been around.

Im looking into one of these, but it seems they go for a pretty penny even compared to a brand new one?! Any idea of where to start for a first vintage GMT?

Buddy Orchi,
Thanks for the information, I always wonder what "ROW" meant. I have watches with ROW and some without.

Err Buddy Eddie...no thanks necessary...
Orchi is just sharing what Orchi has learned from own experience...
n other reliable sources...

So when you are presented with a Vintage Rolex of that era...
or you are considering to get one...
which might have a USA/North America paper...
the movement inside should be marked "ROW"...originally.

Of course there might be exceptions that the movement might have been...
a later replacement...
or there might be one or two year difference(both ends)...
within the window of years beginning the 1950s until Mid 1960s...
whereby some movements may or may not have this "ROW" signature...

Hi friends!!
Great thread, with amazing watches and stories!
Enjoyed so much reading and looking at those beautiful work horses, shining in spite of their battle scars!!

I wish to share my own, a 1680 which was a gift from my wife, which bought it brand new at a local AD in february 1977, as a replacement of my 5513 stolen a few days before by to armed guys.

It was my only watch for many years, and used for decades as my only watch, to work, holidays, sport scuba diving, etc., day and night as don´t take my watch off to sleep.

It got only two services at the local Official Rolex Service, circa 1992 and in 2010, never polished. Only thing replaced, gaskets, tube and crown, and the plexi. Received a complete cleaning and oiling, of course.
The only cosmetic treatment was done by myself, a bit of nylon pencil passes on the bracelet.
The bezel has turned grey, and got a small hole at 14/15 minutes.
Love this watch!!

Best cordial regards, Abel.
